I've carried my Canon SLR's & lenses around on my motorcycles for years. I always carry the camera body & lens in a well padded camera case. In the last ten years or more I rode a Goldwing and the camera bag was in the trunk of the bike.

The only possible problem I had was with a Sigma 24-70mm lens, the lower barrel of the lens started cracking apart next to the lens mount. The lens was about eight years old. I don't know if this was from traveling so much on a bike or something else I did. On the plus side Sigma was able to repair it better than new.

Do any of you bikers go to the Sturgis, SD Motorcycle Rally? Some real photo opportunities there.

I want to thank you all for answering my question...It sounds like taking it in my tour pack would be no problem. I have some time yet to make a decision an get the appropritate packing. I did pay particular attention to Mr. B, as I ride the motorcycle to be free of all kinds of gadgets. My Olympus C-720 does a good job, is almost pocket size, and has a manual mode.... Anyway i'm still thinking.....and glad to see all of you riders out there on the HOG....Thanks again!

Rode up ther in 2010 and stayed in Custer for five days. Rode all over the area there, out to Bad Land Nat'l Park, Devils Tower, etc. Great riding even with all the bikes. Didn't have room to stop and take photos a lot of the time. Went up again in 2011 the day after it ended. It was like a ghost town. Helluva contrast to just one day before.

As Lens Cap closes this thread, i've picked up on the 'gadget-free' point: the guy i motorcycled to Timbuktu with (http://nicksanders.com/cms/)
Nick, is by trade, a Film -maker/cameraman. He's circumnavigated the world on an R1 (a mean sportsbike) several times, often taking only his cameras (movie/still) - no spare clothes (hobo!), just basic documents (passport/visas etc), and bank cards. I reckon that turns the tables?
Somewhere on the web (can't find it right now) is a short clip of his bike in the Namibian Desert, bogged down in sand, with his tripod bungee'd across the windshield, no packing, just scraping away... tough stuff

Lowepro has a great one its called Stealth Reporter D100AW.
It says all weather, however I've not had it on during a trip in the rain with my bike, try not to do that, not much fun. But it does come with a shoulder strap and waist strap as well so you can position it to be behind you while riding. Very well made, I can get my D300s with grip and an 80x400mm in it and a few other little goodies, spare batts, remote trigger, small stuff but not much. Well padded and fits well. You could pack a lot more with out the monster lens, like more lens's..ect. Three little side pouches, check it on their web site. Nice to have.

I grew up 15 miles from Custer. Glad you enjoyed the area. Come back again and take photos. Locals try to stay off the highway during rally week.
