You haven't lived util your dog gets hit by a skunk. For that matter hitting one with your car is not much better.

 I can honestly say my dogs never got sprayed, but I have had the experience of hitting one with my car. Ugh!

When I worked nights I had a skunk for a pet" Many a night he would come into the garage when I was doing my woodworkng and wait for a hand out. It got to the point wher I could feed him sunflower seeds from my hand.

Very nice shots Gene M. Glad he didn't decide to spray. The DNR says they have to be very scared before they will spray. They even trap them. Did anyone ever tell you that your icon resembles Ernest Borgnine?

Beautiful pictures. My husband had a too close encounter with a skunk one night when he went to the ballfields to make sure the bases were picked up after the games. Went thru the dugout where he passed too close to a skunk in the dark. We drove home with our heads out the windows.....lol He changed clothes on the carport and had to throw them away. We squirted him with catsup and showered him. It made him barely acceptable to live inside the house....lol Love the pictures....

Very nice photos. He/she looks very well fed and healthy. My hubby was a Conservation Officer in NY for many years, and we always had raccoons, fawns, owls, ferrets, and skunks that he was dragging home until he could get them to a rehabilitator. We had several baby skunks, and they would crawl up under my shirt and go to sleep where it was dark and warm. I never got sprayed, because I didn't think that they could.....well they can, and they are actually worse than the adults. I have since learned that a young skunk will empty its scent sac when startled or feels threatened, while an adult will use just enough to discourage the threat and have some in reserve. We had one young one that we had fed tunafish, and when it was time to let it become a "real skunk" I took it out back and introduced it to some earthworms. It prompty turned around, left me in the garden, and waited by its bowl for the "real food" to appear.

Interesting. I have a friend who had a tame, descented Skunk. He sure had a lot of fun with it. :) Sometimes wild animals grow to trust us. But we must never lose sight that they are wild. There are some UHH members who frequently feed wild birds and deer by hand. You joined after I posted my experience with Chipmunks -- look at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-51162-1.html.

Thanks for looking. -- Gene

Glad you like the pics. Thanks.

I was made aware of the Ernest Borgnine resemblance in another post and he wanted to start a campaign to see if others feel the same. I can't remember who or which post.

Thanks for looking.

When a mother skunk and her babies were confronted by a dog she said, "Children, Bow our heads and let uspray."

I enjoyed your pics but please be wary of nocturnal animals that come out during the day; uncharacteristic behaviour is a possible sign of rabies. Raccoons and skunks can both carry the disease.

Your shots are absolutely amazing on so many levels.

Here where rabies in skunks is epidemic, we worry when we see them running around in the daytime. I've also lost track of the number of times I've washed "skunk" off of my dogs! Tomato juice is the old treatment. In addition to some of the specialized shampoos available, you can use a combination of hydrogen peroxide, artificial vanilla extract and Dawn dishwashing liquid.

We had a family of 5 living in our heater ducts. It took a week and much creativity to get them to leave, but they never sprayed. Wish I had taken pictures.
