Dumb Question

Seems to imply that real photographers don't know or care about art and it is not necessary to photography. This seems to me a grave mistake. Laws of composition, color, tone, etc are purely visual and an artistic knowledge, even if it is intuitional is required for any good photograph, no matter how realistic. Photography with only great skill in camera technique is misguided. I do not distinguish between art and photography, they just use different mediums to achieve an image.
This sounds like the same old argument that occurs in the
"Art" world between realism and the more expressive schools of impressionism or abstraction, each accusing the other of not being "real art".

Photoshop is good when u want to be artistic. But for the most of us we prefer to capture everything on camera. Its about composition, lighting, and taking your time and getting everything right

I totally agree with you, Kylemc99.

A good example: the question on raw come up ever day and the same question and when the read the reply that do no read it again till the understand it. Buy a good manual and keep it with you. That is the way I am learning. Practice observe , observe and practice. I am like ever one else a little dense and then the light finally comes on, was that what they were talking about.

HI there... As you can see your "Dumb Question" was not so dumb after all. Honestly there are no dumb questions here. We ara all here to share and learn with each other.

Most of us agree with you that there could be a seperate entity involving digital software. Once you get to know the basics you'll be clicking onto the photo editing program of your choice with little thought. I can give you some thing to think about... It isn't the software that makes a photo inspiring and memorable. It's the moment a shot is taken and how it touches us emotionally. Light! I suggest you learn as much as you can about light, low light , sunlight, night light, light you create and how your camera operates with these different light levels.

We all need to keep asking questions.

Life is a learning experience.

I am new to digital, well photography in general. I find this site awesome and am just learning the jargan. Really have not looked at other forums.
My question? We are in the digital age and Editing software is very important. Why is there not a separate section for this and within that sections on the different software. Around here Adobe seams to be #1 so a section for that. Corel has some following. Many like freeware like GIMP etc. It seams like most use more than one? So why not have a place for this instead of lumped in the general section?
Just a thought!

To answer your question, I haven't seen many 'How-to" software Q's on these boards. There is a lot of software mentioned, but not a lot of in-depth discussion.

The software most mentioned is PS-Elements.

Yes its the new darkroom. But I'm from the old school. Use to pick up your prints from the photo-mart. Look though them toss the bad ones, keep the good ones and keep on shooting. Alot cheaper today. But you can do alot with those programs. Alot of fun stuff too. Good luck

screen48,
To accomplish what you would like to see is a suggestion for those who operate this website. My suggestion is to scroll down to the very bottom of any page you're on and click on the "Contact Us" link. Tell them your idea and see what the response will be. Other than that, have you tried the "Search" link at the top of the page? Simply type in what you're hunting for, maybe in two or three different ways, and see what comes up. For now, that would be the only way you would see any groupings about Adobe or any other brand. Hope this helps.

I agree with your thoughts and would like to see it as well. It would be better than searching for specifics. I'll bet the founder/administrator of this site had no idea that there would be over 10,000 registered users sharing so many ideas. All things evolve and in time I'll bet this site's categories will too.

I would like to see two additional topic areas one for processing and one for finishing. So you have my support.

Linda Lee: You're right, as usual. I would also like to see a section dedicated to photo restoration. Of course, each of these sections should be Gnu Rule Free Zones where any mentor would be authorized for teaching purposes to edit any posted work, but would also need to tell us what software he used, and the editing procedure in sufficient detail so that even a new user could duplicate the edit.

I have and am guilty of thumbing thru the directions (the thick book that came with my camera) your exactly right about reading the directions!

This is really off the subject but here goes. Most manufacturers have on their websites, in the support area, free downloads of manuals for their products, usually in PDF format. It is far easier for me to read one of these manuals on my computer screen than to read the fine print of one of these paper manuals. On the screen, one of these manuals can be resized and searched with ease. I keep the paper manual in my camera bag in case I need to look up something in the field.

Digital cameras and post production programs (PP) selections are all over the place and are personal choices. If you a beginner start with the free programs. Gimp and Pecasa are a couple and get your feet wet on the PP side. Then if you want to optain a higher quatlity of PP programs, you can go to the internet and obtain free PP programs for a limited time period on various Adobe programs. All of this will keep occupied for a while. The best method is "learn by doing", join a camera club that help beginners ...and then just enjoy.

All I can say is WOW....
If my skills with the camera were perfect I would be making money at it instead of just reading about it......I will never be perfect and I may get some good shots but sometimes I need to or want to do something, change something, crop, resize, remove a pimple from my granddaughters nose....lol
I use Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop Elements, I am not perfect with those either....so I Googled PSP forums and found one that I really liked that had people using these products.... they have a section for each software and they are always very helpful...
That said the photo classes I took each time the instructor said the thing we had to do is blow the dust off the book that came with the camera and read in front to back.....and do the same the next week....and he is a pro...I have read mine twice I swear things were added that I didn't see the first time....
But digital for the most part is free so take a shot with different settings and whatever as long as you have the light and see what YOU like..maybe it needs a tweak or maybe not...
