There is nothing wrong with brand loyalty and staying with what you know. However out of all the posts that have been made the two here are the ones that I agree with the most and if I had to make a decision today I would most definitely be taking these posts under advisement.

Jim has both Canon and Nikon cameras. Although the 7D has been out for a while, it's a great camera (king of the crops from Canon), the D800 is still relatively new and (from what I have read and from comparisons I have seen) is also a great camera. He can make and give an informed opinion about the (somewhat) latest technology from two great camps.

The advice from Mudshark is also valid. You may have purchased your camera (whichever brand) years and years ago and because you were happy then found no reason to change (especially after investing a lot of money in lenses). But technology changes and even your style and choice of photography may change. For me, rather than just saying I'm staying with one particular brand, I would look at my situation and what is out on the market, I am not an impulsive buyer and I research equipment to death before taking the plunge.

Currently my hat is in the Canon camp, I got into photography a couple of years ago with a Rebel T3 to see if I liked the hobby. A few months ago I bought a Canon 7D and absolutely love it, I have also invested quite a bit of money in lenses. Before I got the 7D I researched that camera and the 5D MkII. If I were to make the move to a full frame camera TODAY it would be to the 5D MkIII BUT if that purchase was to replace lost or stolen equipment I would be taking a long hard look at the D800 as well. Cheers.

I rented the D7000 body and definitely preferred the 7d over it....but put that nikkor 24-70mm2.8 lens on the d7000 and the photos were above super sharp.

I have had the D800 bodies for awhile now and still prefer the canon menu and button system over nikon.

but all in all...I would probably most likely buy all nikon stuff if it all got stolen.

I've been on both sides of the fence for long periods of time. When digital came I left decades of Nikon and started with the Canon 1Ds and never looked back...they were clearly the tech leader. Now days I don't know...I think I would take my time, take a very, very close look at Nikon and possibly others and try to make an objective decision.
I tend to look beyond lenses, chips, ISO speeds all that obvious stuff and think about customer service, can you easily talk to someone who knows what they are doing, and real important the "feel" of the camera in your hand...love the battery grips with the vertical shooting.......little stuff like that really adds up in everyday usage.

No I would not move on to something different I have used Canon cameras forever so I'll stay with Canon because I trust them. And I don't feel like I'm being compromised at all. Nikon folks are pretty much the same too you shoot with what you like, are a custom with.

I know what you mean; I sold my Leica M2, M3 and M4 about 30 years ago and miss them a lot.

actually would look real hard at pentax. they kept the af motor where it belongs in the body, and put IS where it belongs again in the body. Plus I like that they are getting creative and thinking outside the box.

Just like Apple computers...once you try one, you'll never go back.

Last year I returned all my Nikon gear to B&H (D300, D700, D3s, & 10 lenses) and bought a Leica M9 rangefinder and 50mm Sumicron lens. I'm slowly adding Leica lenses.

Would I change brands today? Never. I love the Leica and that "Leica look".

I'd take the money and buy a P&S and then retire a couple years early. LOL

No. I've been loyal to Canon since 1966 and they have given me no reason to change.

NO WAY! It's been Nikon for a very long time! Never found anything better. It would take a lot to ever convince me to change. My feeling is that a lot of Canon users have never been behind the viewfinder of a Nikon and so do not know a thing about it's capabilities. Then again it's their loss not mine.

Sorry in a past life, years ago that is, I sold cameras, handled Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Rollie, Practica, Practina, Minolta, Mamayia, Konica, Miranda, etc in 35mm, some of those names in larger format also, Nikons were the most uncomfortable to handle and use then, now if I could get a digital that felt like a Miranda or a Rollie SLR I might be tempted to change, even now my daughter owns a Nikon but if my Canon is nearby she grabs Canon not Nikon, Bob.

I have always used Canon, but if I lost everything, I probably would change to Nikon to see if I have been missing anything. I do like my 7D.

I do believe the same is true for the user of any brand.
Occasionally I run into someone who looks down their nose at my Olympus gear and even make some remark about switching to a "better" brand.
My question always is, "When was the last time you used an Olympus" and invariably they have never even had one in their hands.
Then there is the odd one, that will have looked at Olympus, but the reason for going with another brand always, and I mean always, is NOT the quality of the photos, but something else: The salesperson recommended or My friend has one or, well you name it.
I'm fortunate I guess, that my son has a Nikon, his father-in-law has a Canon, and two of my brothers have Olympus.
So I did have the opportunity to try them all out.
Oh, and BTW, the cameras were similar in capability and quality.

I know what you mean. I worked at a camera store (a real camera store) in the 70's. I got a chance to handle many different brands I used the canon F-1 and FTb at the time but switched to Nikon when the FM and FE came out. The MD-11 was the main reason since I shot a lot of sports. Now I'm back with Canon with one EOS film body and two DSLR's and several lenses. If all of it disappeared I'd still go back to Canon. As a side note we were the first in the state to get the Mamiya 645. We got one body, one 80mm, and the prism finder and a 120 insert. I was told it was not to leave the store. Got some great shots over the weekend and it was back in the showcase before the boss came back to town.   Also have a Mamiya 645 1000s with 80mm and prism finder. Just to bring back memories.

I had a Crown Graphic with a 645 back in addition to a half a dozen film holders and a Polaroid back, great camera, easy to hold while using but awkward to carry with you, worked nice with a Metz 202 along side too, old days and memories, don't really want to go back,Bob

No. I've been using Canon since I purchased my first camera and I'm comfortable with it and like the way it interfaces with Mac.

Bob, now I'm curious... what makes Nikon so much better than Canon?
