Canon SX40 IS Magnetic Field

While putting my SX40 in and out of a close fitting camera bag, trying to fit it properly, I discovered a magnetic field at the hinge of the articulated LCD. I found this when I sat the camera down on a plastic and steel wire tye. The tye stuck to the camera. At first I thought it was static electricity, but the tye would only stick to the hinge area. I tried to get the tye to stick to two other Canon cameras with LCDs, but to no avail. Not even any attemp to stick after moving the camera in and out of the close fitting bag repeatedly. The morning after revealed the same magnetism on the SX40 as the night before. Removed the battery and the results were the same. My fear of a static charge was that dust, etc would be attracted to inner camera parts.

I wonder if all SX40s are magnetic? What gives? Thanks, Huddy

Well; we learn something strange everyday. My G12 has the same articulating LCD as the SX40, and a bread tie will stick to it also. It is in the screen side of mine not the body, in fact its the lower corner next to the body.

My SX30 doesn't seem to be magnetic.

I had to open the screen on mine, and try the corners its not real strong. But the tie will stick, if you get just the right spot.

I suspect it has to do either with the image orientation as you rotate the screen, or the camera leveling indicator on the screen. I don't think the SX30 had that, I'm not sure the SX40 has it ( the camera level indicator?).

Well it can't have anything to do with the electronic level, only the G12 has that. But image orientation would be common to both SX cameras, and the G12.

I am on the DP Canon forum, and the other Canon Digital Forum all the time, and I have never seen anything to do with this.

I went on both Canon forums, and did a search "nothing". I have had my G12 about 8 months, and knew nothing about it, until now. I don't think its deadly, or will destroy anything as Canon must have some reason, for its being there. :-)

Yes at the bottom, but not the top.

Just a guess, but there may be a small electronic coil in the circuit which provides the high voltage for the backlight of the display or for the electronic flash. If it is not totally shielded then it may create a very minor magnetic field.

Probably a magnetic switch that gets tripped by the magnet for letting the camera know the position of the display. My Canon S3IS uses similar technology to send the display to the eyepiece when the LCD is closed and turned in toward the camera.

Blackberry phones have a very similar device built in so it knows to go to sleep when in a Blackberry pouch or clip. Hold a small magnet just above the space bar and around the H while the display is on.
