I have a cabin on the lake that our family enjoys on weekends, holidays, and occasional vacations. I certain someone is using our cabin. I would like a suggestion for a surveillance type came- a camera that could be mounted and left at the cabin, which would snap periodic pictures. I would be interested in a small camera that could be mounted indoor or outdoor. Any suggestions

trail cam....motion activated like hunters use.

Many surveillance cameras for home use are motion activated
also you can buy cheapies that are dummies that look just like a real one.
It seems to me you would want to scare them off. I'd also talk to local police.

I've seen the dummies. Some come with a blinking red LED.

Yeah Jerry, I've been thinking of putting a dummy camera on all 4 corners of my house. They blink and move so they are very noticeable.

I have a motion-activated LED spot by the garage. It uses just a few watts and lights up a large area.

Lots and Lots of outside motion detector floodlights will do a lot to keep intruders away.

In the UK any surveilance camera has to have a sign saying who is running it....kind of defeating the object (or added disincentive to not hang around)Don't know about your state or Fed laws. worth a quick search as you may not 'prove' your case in law with unlawful use of cameras under UK law....

Many stores have signs telling customers that there are surveillance cameras in use, but I've never heard of a law like that. Does that apply to homeowners who install them on their property?

Not sure, but I simply put the decal in my window warning of such. This, like the stores, could have a deterrent effect as well. The decals generally come with the cameras.

Recording sound (speech) definitely comes under Federal jurisdiction and would not be admissible as I understand it. So it is simpler to not connect it.

Not so sure about recording sound in this situation! Sound recording of PHONE conversations is not legal unless both parties know about it (except govt wiretaps). However for security cameras in homes, etc, I don't think that sound would be an issue. And any intruder (involved in illegal activity) has no right to expect privacy anyway!

Simply putting signs up on doors and windows can be a huge deterrence.

Yeah, when I was a kid growing up in a small town in Indiana, the local bank had the big burglar alarm out front with a big label: "BURGLAR ALARM" My dad told me that was there to discourage bank robbers.

Because of a similar problem at my place of business, I got a Bushnell Trophy Cam which has all sorts of cool features, including video, and uses IR at night. It doesn't flash but briefly glows red when activated in the dark. I haven't caught our bogeyman yet but that's because I've only used it for business purposes once. The rest of the time it's out in the woods near my favorite trails! So far I've only got photos and videos of me, my pets, and a raven. But it is a pretty good camera and cost less than $150.

Not sure that a home owner needs to put a sign up (in UK) but I was told filming kids damaging cars outside my house could not be used in court as no warning had been posted. (filming kids is a huge no no here...When our Housing Association (social landlord) put cameras outside a tenants flat who was being targetted for 'racial abuse' the company used had to put a large sign up saying they were responsable for filming and give a telephone number to contact. Same as at work we have a contact number posted on the sign saying cameras used. This is UK law....we have the most survielance cameras in the world....official. we probably have the most laws too!

I don't mind those cameras at all, and I just assume that whenever I'm out of the house, there's a good chance that I'm on camera. So what? It's when they have cameras inside my home that I'll be concerned. Surveillance cameras have helped to catch criminals and find kidnapped children.
