Meant to add that the first one you hover over will be the first one in the series.

Hmm, what am I doing wrong? The first one on my list comes up with no number, then the numbering begins with the second one??

That's what it is supposed to do....the first one that you hovered over to begin the rename will have the initial name you give and the remainder will have numbers next to them

OK thanks! I thought I must have done something wrong since my first one had no number. I guess we can just refer to it as 'zero photo'. Nice shortcut, thanks. Never get too old to learn something new.

In windows you can go to Windows Explorer....find the folder that your photos are in....tag all of them.hold down the ctrl button and tag the ones you want..go to the first one.....hover over it and right click.....when dropdown menu pops up click on rename.....whatever name you type in will appear on each photo with a ascending number next to it...ie: grandcanyon (1) grandcanyon (2) etc.

Right. That's how I did it, and it did number them in order - but it didn't number them in the order I had them in. Many we're one after the other, but many were randomly scattered. I'll play with it tomorrow.

Thats what I like about ACDsee. You can put whatever you want in the bucket and then just batch rename it and number it how ever you want.

Some sorting systems lack sophistication. If you number items 1-10, 10 comes first. If you add a letter, it may change the sorting order. As mentioned before, always start with 001 as opposed to 1. Also, some sorting systems allow binary or hexadecimal sorting; make sure such options are not in use on your computer. Also, some batch sorters will allow two to four components if a title; be careful which you use first.

Jerry, I know you won't make this mistake, but for novices, watch how you use dates. If you name photos by date, ALWAYS use year, month day (yyyymmdd), not day, month, year (dmyy); otherwise 12/13/98 will come before 2/4/13.

Here's a strange one. I have 53 images in a folder, numbered roughly 2 - 52, with several labeled 31A, 45B, etc. I thought I could select all of them, right-click, choose Rename, and have them renamed Sandy (1), Sandy (2), etc. It did that all right, but the pictures are now in random order, not the order I had them originally. Some of the pictures are in their original order, and some are not.

Since I already have them in the order I want, renumbering and ordering them isn't essential, but I'm wondering why the order of the images changed after renaming them.

I use am appplet called Bulk Rename Utility. Downloadable and usable for free. It is very flexible and does have a bit of a learning curve, but works wonderfully well, with previews of what the file name will be when renamed.

I tried again. I numbered 18 images 001, 002, etc. I selected all, right-clicked, selected Rename, and entered "test." The order changed. Ctrl-Z put them back.

EDIT: After renaming those 18, I copied them to another folder and used the same process to rename them. They rearranged themselves again. So, it looks like every time Windows renames a batch of files, it changes the order.

EDIT: I got it to work using Irfanview. Renaming keeps the files in their original order. Live and learn.

I've never had that problem other that when I play them back in some viewing programs it will group all of the first digits together as in 1, 10, 100, 2, 20, etc.
