Here's a strange one. I have 53 images in a folder, numbered roughly 2 - 52, with several labeled 31A, 45B, etc. I thought I could select all of them, right-click, choose Rename, and have them renamed Sandy (1), Sandy (2), etc. It did that all right, but the pictures are now in random order, not the order I had them originally. Some of the pictures are in their original order, and some are not.
Since I already have them in the order I want, renumbering and ordering them isn't essential, but I'm wondering why the order of the images changed after renaming them.
Were they renamed by some priority? (Such as "file size" or "time shot" )

The were named 02, 02, 04, 05, etc. In a few ases, I had to name some 034A, 034B, to get them in between 034 and 035.
Then you manually renamed rather than using batch rename? If they are sorted alphabetically, then the numbers may be random after the "Sandy", if they are sorted alphanumerically, then the number sequence should be considered by Windows.

As I edited them in LR, I exported them to a separate folder, naming them 01, 02, etc. Then I did a batch rename, and that changed the order.

You have to stay with the two or three digit naming sequence. Ex: Sandy(01), Sandy(02), Sandy(03) or Sandy(001), Sandy(002), Sandy(003).
If you named the photos Sandy(1),Sandy(2), Sandy(3), etc when you get to Sandy(10) windows will sort that ahead of Sandy(1). I never understood why but it works that way.

Hi Jerry,
I have found, doing similar thing, that using three figures worked well for me: 001, 002, etc.

All I did was highlight them and said to name them Sandy. I've learned to number files with a "0" coming first. I'll have to experiment with it some more.
When I want to rename a load of images in a folder (in Windows) I highlight the LAST one then highlight the First one and right click - press 'rename' - type the name I want in the first image i.e. the above 'Sandy' & press 'spacebar'.
Windows then renames from the first to the last numerically 'Sandy 1, Sandy 2 etc.
If I later add more images to the folder and place them among the already numbered ones I just add a letter so it fits in then repeat the above exercise.
This also works when choosing images from among others not to be named - Just remember to work from the LAST to the FIRST using the Ctrl key.

I use am appplet called Bulk Rename Utility. Downloadable and usable for free. It is very flexible and does have a bit of a learning curve, but works wonderfully well, with previews of what the file name will be when renamed.

On many systems the order might not look logical. Especially with numbers. Example:
1
10
11
12
2
3
30
31
32
4
So by putting 00 in front of your numbers, it forced the OS to sort numerically. I work with Linux a lot and write software, so I have to deal with this all the time. Hope this helps.
For renaming a batch, I use EzThumbnails it is free and works great for resizing, etc.
In windows you can go to Windows Explorer....find the folder that your photos are in....tag all of them.hold down the ctrl button and tag the ones you want..go to the first one.....hover over it and right click.....when dropdown menu pops up click on rename.....whatever name you type in will appear on each photo with a ascending number next to it...ie: grandcanyon (1) grandcanyon (2) etc.
Meant to add that the first one you hover over will be the first one in the series.

Hmm, what am I doing wrong? The first one on my list comes up with no number, then the numbering begins with the second one??

That's what it is supposed to do....the first one that you hovered over to begin the rename will have the initial name you give and the remainder will have numbers next to them
