Our grandson celebrated his 10th birthday the other day, and besides the Meccano and science kits, he was also given a kitten, about 7 weeks old.
Penny managed to climb on the couch, and promptly got inside the paper bag, curled up and went to sleep.
I had forgotten to charge the batteries for my flashlight, otherwise I could have set it up as a remote. As it was, the on-camera flash unfortunately gave me a dark shadow along the top edge of the bag.

A kitten for a ten year old boy? He must be a special kid.. I have a grandson who wanted a bird for his twelfth birthday. He didn't get it, so he took some of his birthday money and bought one himself. Now he has two. Pets teach kids a lot of things: responsibility, compassion come to mind but there is a lot more. Great shot even with the black edging on top.
He is the oldest of 3; they live on a 10-acre farm and have horses, dogs, chickens, cats, angora goats, not to speak of the mice, rats, coyotes, bear, deer, ducks, swallows, hummingbirds....
In other words, they are used to animals and have been taught from very early on to treat them well.
He's had the kitten for less than a week now, but it already sleeps on his bed!

Isn't it strange how animals know who good people are and warm up to them quicker. Maybe that's why cats hiss at me and dogs run?
It's a nice shot and kittens are alot of fun to photograph, they also present a chalange as they never realy hold for a pose so I am always chasing my cat.
Don't apoligize for the shadow. You took the picture as it was and it came out great. Flash is the most overused tool of photography.
See how many photos you can take without the flash and notice
the quality of the composition comparing the two methods. I almost never use a flash and get great results, shadows are part of the unposed life around us. Use them.
Without flash was definitely not possible in this room.
I do like to use natural light whenever/wherever possible, especially if it casts light shadows on faces.

Next time you're confronted by a similar photo opportunity you can always hold your camera upside down. Nothing will change except that the shadow which annoyed you will be gone!

Now that's a novel idea! I'm afraid it will mean some practice, but hey, that's part of my learning, isn't it.
Thanks for that idea, Raynardo!
