I'm surprised that no one has said - "the best computer is the one you have with you!!"
I don't know . I. Was thinking the one U have would not be enough. But I did get a lot more response than I figured. Thank you for noticeing . Maybe I should have mentioned what I have ?

Nah. I was just being flippant.
The new iMac 27" thin version is awesome, of course you loose the built in DVD drive, but some of the tests rate it faster than the Mac Pro tower machines.
If a laptop is on your horizon, the Mac Book Pros with retina displays are awesome.
Yes I have PCs running Windows 7, and I grit my teeth because the display and definition are no where equal to the Mac
Macs used to be known for being a long lasting upgradeable systems however they have gone down a the path of deciding to become a part of the buy it and plan on buying another in the future. The Mac Book Pros have the memory built onto the motherboard, so you have to order 8 gigs or 16 gigs or RAM when you place the order. The Mac Book Pro laptops with Retina display require you to purchase an external DVD drive/burner.
I use the PCs I have an an additional archive to store my edited photos and upload them to my website.
The upgrade process for Macs if pretty straight forward one place to check your Macs for software updates.
If you intend to take your computer on excursions don't skimp on RAM or the graphics card. You don't want to spend all of your time watching the spinning Mac beachball twirl, or the ever so lovely PC hour glass.
I have an 8 gig 7i custom pc with dual 22" samsung monitors and wonder what that 27" mac with an outside cd/dvd cost in comparing to a pc. I mean the total cost.
And I am very happy with the speed of my system.

Don't forget the IPS monitor.
I am now using a Vizio laptop with IPS screen. There are a few laptops with IPS.
Angle of view not as good as my desktop IPS monitor, but much better than standard (TN) for editing on laptop.
It's a sweet laptop.

I am new to this , would like to view photos from a cd or dvd that I have stored them on and possibly store photos on a computer . What do you suggest would be the best computer to use . Also I will be taking this with me on my excursions, I like to take a lot of nature photos .
I got the previous generation of Macbook Pro refurbished through Apple. It comes with a DVD drive and expandable memory. Sometimes their improvements don't make the product better.
I would think a good quality laptop regardless whether a Mac or PC would be ideal if the size of the screen meets your needs

And that is often the main problem.
