UK Tour for Photographers

Here is my personal suggestion for our US friends considering a photographic holiday in the UK. It is based on a two week stay (14 nights). The itinerary can easily be extended or shortened depending how many days you have available. A hire car would be preferred although it could be done by train and bus, with some route trimming. I apologise to any of my fellow UK friends if they feel left out of my suggested route.
Please do not waste too much time in the tourist triangle of London, Oxford and Stratford upon Avon, one whole day is enough in London, and about 5 hours or so is ample for any major town/city.
My suggested route will follow in a my next post.

Day 1: Assuming your are arriving at Heathrow or Gatwick, pick your hire car up and drive to Oxford stay in or near for one night
Say 2: Drive to Stratford via Chipping Campden and Broadway stay in or near Stratford for one night.
Say 3: Drive to Chester, via Worcester and Hereford, stay near Chester the night.
Day 4: Drive to Lancaster via Liverpool, Southport, and Preston, stay one night in or near Lancaster.
Say 5: Drive to Kendal for 2 nights and explore the Lake Distrct.
Day 6: Drive to Stirling(Scotland) via Carlise, Gretna, Ayr, stay in Stirling a night
Day 7: Drive to Fort William via Loch Lomond, stay in Ft William for a night.
Day 8: Drive to Aberdeen via Baemar and stay for one night.
Day 9: Drive to Edinburgh via coast road and stay for one night.
Day 10: Drive to Durham via Berwick and Alnwick and stay for one night.
Day 11: Drive to York via The North Yorkshie Moors stay for night near York.
Day 12: Drive to Cambridge via Lincoln and stay for a night near Cambridge.
Day 13/14: Drive towards London, do not drive in to the city, stay a few miles out, inside the M25 in the Chigwell, Woodford area for a couple of nights and travel by The Underground into London.
You can easily get back to your airport from that area.
Get a cheap GB road atlas for about £2 from most garages and use "A" and "B" roads where possible to see the real UK.
Only book rooms for first and last nights, Travelodge have good cheap rooms, otherwise just turn up anywhere you like, don't leave it late though..
This tour is not comprehensive more of a taster for any photographer. If you have more time venture into Wales for a couple of days and make sure you include North Wales and its western coast. Don't forget to learn some Welsh.
If you decide to go into Wales start from Chester on your 4th day.

not a bad idea John but would suggest you also list the places of interest. I would also stress the North Wales bit, if you're into landscapes....

Might be useful, but I challenge you to 'do' London in a day or two. I've lived here for nearly 70 years and am still finding new things to see and photograph. If you're going to restrict yourself to the tourist spots (and just see them through the viewfinder) you could just about manage in two Summer days, but if you want to see the real London and experience what it has to offer - a couple of weeks, minimum.

That's a great itinerary ------IF YOU WANT TO MISS OUT ON SOME THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PARTS OF THE UK i.e. Cornwall, Devon & the West Country. Dorset, Hampshire & the South East, The amazing South Downs National Park. And what about Stonehenge , what about Wales? I spent 2 weeks in Wales last year and didn't see all of it. It is a massive mistake to think you can see the UK in 14 days, you just can't. I have lived here all my life, are extremely well traveled, and I still haven't see half of it. The suggested itinerary will knock up hundreds of miles at £2 ($3.14)+ a gallon, and while seeing some beautiful scenery and Cities you will be rushing past and missing far more than you are seeing.
I would suggest trying to see the UK in 14 days, is as difficult as trying to see the USA in a month ?

£2 + a gallon! In your dreams! £1.32 a litre here. 4.5L = 1 Imp gallon = £5.94.

Last time I stayed in Fort William, more than ten years ago, the Bed & Breakfast wanted £130 per night. The car was reasonably comfortable.

My suggestion was meant to be a taster only, that's why I said book 1st and last nights only so the chance to spend more time in The West Country, Wales, The Lakes or North Yorkshire would be there if needed.
I know two weeks is pushing it, and it would mean going everywhere and seeing nothing, rather like being on a cruise!
