Does anyone out there use a light ring when doing close-up work? if so what is a good brand? Are they even available? Is there a better alternative for shooting small things like fishing flies?

You must check out Nikonian72's threads and pictures. He is the master of the miniscule, The tutor for the tiny, and the educator of the eeensy-weeensy... :)
I use Canon's light ring and find it to be excellent. It gives a nice even lighting. If you want shadows. You can unbalance the two light sources in the unit to various degree. I think I payed around $200 for it several years ago. There may be other brands out there. You just need to do a web search.

Check out ebay. I bought a cheaper model there and it works just fine for my macro work with my Canon 100mm.
I suggest you check out the Neweer LED Ring Light at Amazon.com. It costs a lot less than the Canon and Nikon Brands (under $40) and has many positive reviews.

The LED ringlights are considered underpowered for mid-range (f/8) to small aperture (f/22). Larger apertures dramatically limit your DOF during true macro (1:1), or close to true macro.
