If you like flowers, sea scape, waterfalls, and unique trees, the hawiian tropical botanical gardens north of Helfo. Spent over three hours, and filled two chips with photos.

My wife and I just spent 4 weeks over there and we returned home last night.
Great trip, especially on the Hilo side including the volcano.
Watch for the clearest weather to be there.
Night shots of the volcano were great.
I would send some photos but can't figure out how.

I applied for a teaching job in Hawaii way back when and didn't get it. To bad, sounds like you needed me ;)

Thank you iamsteven, the gardens sound like they deserve several visits! Will bring extra chips and may leave my husband back at the beach so I don't drive him crazy!

Last time I was there several years ago I splurged on a doors off helicopter tour. At that time there was only one company that offered doors off. Sorry I can't remember the company name but it was an easy Google find. I would highly recommend this as an addition to all the rest of your photos. Don't be shy with the pilot, you can (and should) ask hime to spin around, go back, come at it from a different angle, etc. My pilot was very obliging and I ended up with a fantastic shot of two idjits walking on the lava right next to an open lava tube with lava flowing bright red. Definitely worth the price. Not to mention all the great steam shots from the ocean side as the lava spewed into the ocean. hmmm maybe it's time to go back...

You sound way braver than I am, Big-Guy : ) It does sound like the most incredible way to see the volcanoes! How far were you leaning out of the DOORS OFF helicopter when you spotted the idiots walking on the lava? :D :D

Not leaning at all. The pilot tends to travel in a serpentine path so the copter tilts and you get some fab shots. Just an FYI, your strapped in solidly but you can twist to the side and your told to strap the camera to your wrist, like we wouldn't know to do that already. There is no feelings of falling as the g forces keep you soundly in your seat. I was a little nervous too at the start but realized within a couple of minutes this was one of the best choices I have made in my life. Hint: high shutter speeds required as you can be travelling at 120 MPH and it doesn't feel like it. That and a telephoto lens requires speeds of 1/500  will give you the satisfaction you are hoping for. Also, NO CHANGING  lenses on the fly, pun intended.

Aloha Vance,
I would love to see your photos!
Here's how... I hope!
After you click on Reply or Quote Reply, do you see the File/picture attachments boxes underneath the message box with a Browse button beside them?
1. Move the images you want to post to your computer desktop.
2. Click the BROWSE button, and you should see your desktop files.
3. One at a time select a photo and upload. You'll see some writing in the little white box next to the browse button.
4. You can add a label for it in the bigger white box.
5. After you've uploaded up to three images, click SEND - NOT Preview or the pictures will fall off : ).
6. You will see the option to add additional pictures after you see the first three.
7. I am not a techie, so if this doesn't work, please contact admin and get the pros to help :-) :-)

I would love any suggestions you Hawaii residents or travelers have for photography on the Island of Hawaii. And please feel free to post a few of your images here for a little inspiration!

Wisdom you can offer on photographing in Volcanoes National Park and any other favorite spots around the island would be much appreciated! We are flying directly into Kona and will be meandering only the Big Island for two weeks, with just photography and chillin' on the agenda.

Green Sand Beach is pretty cool-
