DFCHEIF7 in hiding. Here we go again when the Hog stoops to the Ugly part of it's title. You may disagree with what has been said in a post. Especially when you cannot differentiate between the word competitors in a business situation and the word competition. It's a pity that you feel you have to insult a fellow member because you happen to disagree with his ideas and what he has written. The Hog is a place where like minded people gather to further their photographic knowledge in problem solving, equipment advice, and to learn new techniques. Keep your insults for somewhere else, if you haven't got anything constructive or instructive to say then don't answer the post

You are just too much fun. You give terrible advice, but fun. At least I give advice that works. Yours is awful.

Well said Captain. It's always the same, those with a limited knowledge of a subject nearly always end up insulting the person who has the knowledge, it's their only means of having the last word. It usually backfires on them.

My two cents worth..
The BW film used was 5"x 4" Kodak Tri-X 320. I had a look at the notch codes..
Boring ? Yes, but it gets in the way of the play-school arguments..

I like being the clown - makes people smile. You also called me an old fart - well...that is correct.

Note I never attacked your character - only your suggestions to "do your own thing." I have every reason to believe you are fine person...evidently with no concept of how to learn something complex. I never intended to insult you, only to warn new folks not to take your advice.

And it's amusing you have criticized my spelling - it is "thou" not "thow." The phrase "holier-than-thou," is hyphenated, by the way. :-)

I find you very entertaining. The funny thing is you take this so seriously while I am here laughing.

Na I don't need to read back the posts to you because of your attitude on here. Holier-than-thou eh! you just can't help yourself can you. Why are you here anyway to insult other members by calling them clowns and old farts. If you don't agree with what a member has posted, then give a constructive criticism and say how you would go about the work. If you haven't got that knowledge then sit back and watch what the people who have the knowledge have to say, that is how you learn.

No I don't class myself as an expert. I do have a BA in Professional Photography and I have done photography for a living since 1975.
Having a degree was of no help to me whats so ever in getting a job, so I went freelance and starved to death in the process till I got a job with a schools photography company. I eventually fell into doing events photography and now work front of stage at Music Fests and Gigs around the UK. The reason why I'm on the Hog is to learn. There is not to much finesse in taking stage pics as you cannot continually be resetting your camera do to the varying lighting conditions. Plus you are also trying to keep up with band members cavorting all over the stage. I come on here to learn. In the last year or so I have started doing landscapes. I learned a lot from various people on here and now sell most of my landscape pictures. No I don't class myself as an expert as I am always learning new ways to improve my photography. My professional bodies that I am a member of IE the BIPP British Institute of Professional Photographers and the Master Photographer Association, say I am. Most of all my clients go away happy with their results, and that is all that matters

Nothing to do with the thread, which is ridiculously out of control, but I love your username. Perhaps you should have an apostrophe before the 'K' though ;-)

OK, I'll add my 2 cents. Might have been mentioned, but the picture in the OP probably used some form of subtraction. That might have been a large black flag, or the black side of a 5-in-1 reflector, placed just out of shot camera right.

Window light for sure, with a nice slightly overcast sky outside. Definitely NOT an umbrella. Maybe a BIG softbox or octobox, but if so, then preferably with an egg-crate grid to minimise spill.

Every serious photographer, and definitely portrait photographers, should have a bunch of reflectors. I've got about eight now, if I count my green screen. The scrim from a large 5-in-1 would be ideal to place in front of a window if the light outside was on the harsh side.

The best lighting photographer I know (Bret Lucas of F-Stop Studios) says that the ideal time to shoot portraits outside is under hazy cloud. That gives you nice soft, all round light, but the sun will still have just enough directional light to provide some modelling, and put some subtle highlights on promontories like tip of the nose and cheek bones.

BTW I never link to the above site without insisting you check out the animated video link. It's outstanding IMHO. It only made third place in the 2011 PSNZ National Exhibition AV section, but I am sure that was because the content made some of the old fart judges uncomfortable.
