I have had this rule for many years but have no idea what it is for I would really appreciate it if someone could enlighten me as to its use.
:?:
Thanks for the reply but that is not the same . I have several of those folding wooden ones
This was my fathers who at one time was an Artillery officer it may some connection to surveying. There is no manufacturers marks on it at all.
Many thanks for that it would appear that it is something along those lines I will have to do some more research
I have a gut feeling it's more to do with navigation than surveying. I could be and am probably totally wrong, but if you follow the link, scroll down and you will find a small folding brass ruler in the marine section.
http://www.paulmaddenantiques.com/anin.htmlThe markings are quite indisinct but I think I can see the logarithmic scale which is clearer on your photos.
If I'm right, then S=Speed, T=Time t=?????
As it is labelled as a sector ruler, then I imagine you are measuring the angle of the horizon to an object in the sky - Sun, Moon, Star?
It's just a guess.
Of course if your father was artillery, maybe the instrument measured the angle at which the shell had to be fired. Another guess.

I think you may be correct I have scrolled down the page and found a couple that are very similar in ivory, as my father served in India this may have been made there. again many thanks Julian
Looks like a old drafting tool

Many thanks Alf I have been to that site and have found out just about all I need to know. It never ceases to amaze me how much info can be obtained from UHH.
