Hello Nikonian, getting older reveals; changes in eyesight, steady hands and getting less.
IS, VR and whatever is good, I like it. Just have to remember to turn it off when using tripod.

Wondering, if we forget to turn the VR off while using a tripod, how does this affect the image?

This may sound like a silly question, but if a VR lens is used on a VR-equipped camera, does it improve or degrade overall VR?

The same situation can arise with Auto-Focus: new Nikkor lenses have built-in A-F, but can be used on older Nikon camera bodies, which also have built-in A-F. The lens A-F supercede the body A-F. I suspect the same over-ride with VR.

Same is true with Sony.

I assume this is a misunderstanding and the camera is VR-"capable" with a VR-equipped lens (because there are non-VR lenses available too), instead of being VR-equipped.[/quote]

Not a misunderstanding. My Sony a55 has VR (called Steady Shot) built into the camera, so no VR lenses are needed. I was just curious if a VR lens would improve the steadiness of a camera like that even more, or if it would be redundant.

Try photographing a scene both ways, and compare. Then you can tell us.

Coco 1964 - now begs the question: with a Sony and internal stabilization -- on or off with a tripod?

As with IS Or VR or OS lenses-when on a tripod or solid surface-Stabilization off. The IS is going to try to eliminate movement that doesn't exist, and just might possibly introduce movement into the image!

Vr is one of the best things that has been developed. We always are looking for a way to be more stable. Just think of it a 200mm was 1/200th and now is a 50th or so. Wow! If you take the same precautions with stability you get amazing results without the tripod.

When shooting without a tripod, do what the olympic sharpshooter's do, breath in, as your exhailing slowly, take your shot, that's probibly the best way to eliminate camera shake when you don't have anything stable to rest your camera on.

I shoot a Nikon 300mm VR almost all the time, shooting wild life action images and nearly all hand held so yes for me the VR was well worth the extra cost. I guess it depends on your type of shooting but in the long run I think it is worth it for almost any type image work.

Arn't most DSLR cameras equipped with "vibration reduction" bilt into the camera?

No. Currently, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, and others, build VR or IS into each of their top-line lenses.

Having just spent a few days at a beach photographing low light sunrises and sunsets, with people and dogs in action, I am delighted to be free of the tripod, and able to shoot at ISOs of 1600, with vibration reduction (VR) in my Nikkor lens. One is so much freer in terms of composition without a tripod. I use the auto ISO with a selection of my minimum shutter speed, so my Nikon D90 picks the lowest ISO that will meet the criterion, up to ISO 1600.

I shoot with a blend of glass on a Nikon D3100 DX, D5100 DX, and D700 FX (Nikkor, Sigma, and Tamron Lenses). The Nikon manual says to turn VR off when on a tripod (adding something like - unless the head is unsecured).

Perhaps more important is this - I do not turn VR on unless it's actually needed.

This method may fly in the face of what most everyone in the world seems to do, and what the camera companies imply with their advertising and marketing. The simple fact is that VR is a solution to a problem, and if you don't have that problem, using VR can become a problem.

VR is specifically designed to work where the camera might be moving slightly, for example, while shooting hand-held. If my cameras are completely still, like when I mount them on a tripod, with VR switched 'on', the lens itself introduces 'movement' of the image.

I insure that VR is off when shooting on a tripod.

Cheers!
Greg

Is it worth the extra $120 to buy a lens with Vibration Reduction(VR) or Optical Stablization(OS)? For example, Amazon has a Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS zoom for $399. They also have a Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC II lens for $279. I know the VR/OS will help control camera shake when hand holding, but if most of the time the camera is on a tripod, is it worth the extra bucks? I've read that their are instances when a camera is on a tripod that VR/OS should be turned off. Not sure I understand that, but if so then VR/OS isn't really needed that much if the camera is on the tripod. Also, I'm aware that when hand holding the camera, I need to set the shutter speed to compensate for the shake.
Need your thoughts on this. Thanks.
