I've just gotten started taking pictures...well, as of a few months ago. So for me, it's just something else - that does not move too fast! - to practice shooting on and then touching up with Lightroom. So, all practice.
This was taken the other night with Jupiter present in the upper left.

I've never been able to tell one white dot from another. They keep moving. I bought a nice telescope, used it for a while, and sold it.

Frankly I am tired of these shots, actually I am more tired of the people who put the Apollo 11 on the moon. Every time I see a moon shot, I look at the landing site and the American flag is still laying on the ground on its' side. I wish some one would go back up there and stick it in the ground properly so this does not happen again.

I think that I read somewhere that the Chinese were planning to go there. I can just imagine them bringing our flag back and saying "Here guys, you forgot something"

Well if they do that, I'd like my Lunar Gravimeter and other equipment and rover back too. We left about $20 million in equipment up there. I wonder what they will charge for that freight bill? LOL

I also heard that the North Koreans want to land a man on the SUN, claim it as North Korean property and then charge us for light. They said they would land at night though so we'll never know for sure. LOL.

I try to improve each shot and enjoy the technical aspects of photography

Exactly! When I was running years ago, I would try to run the same section a little faster. Very satisfying.

What was initially considered a dumb, annoying question because I do it all the time, resulted in a great list of well thought out answers. Why do you ask? Was it to stimulate responses or reasons? "Why" can be critical, curious, helpful or stimulating.

There are many answers depending on the reason for asking. For me its the photographic challenge. I taught astronomy but am new to photography. The other night Jupiter was right next to the moon (from our vantage point for the image). The moon is too bright but Jupiter is too dim. It can't be captured in one exposure. So I love photoshoping images. The light is from the Sun for both; the reflections follow very different paths. So do people. All is forgiven.

Very little of what I shoot has any real purpose so my reason for shooting most anything is just because it's fun and I enjoy it. That's the great thing about NOT being a professional, no concerns about the dollars so just do what's fun. It's a little like going to a ball game, I go over and over only because I enjoy it and it's the same with some shots I take over and over just because I enjoy it.

Thats a pretty good explanation of my reasons as well...

And the idea that you are taking a picture of an object 1/4 of a million miles away is pretty intriguing...add to that the idea that Neil Armstrong stood there and waved to me...and I am hooked.

People have a lot of reasons for picking up a camera...the moon is one of those opportunities that me that gets me out the door.

One---- it's dark outside.
Two----- the moon and stars are the brightest spots around.
Three--- I got nothing better to do than a doobie and play with the camera.
Four---- I got no other reason. :-)

Everytime i shoot the moon, i learn something. Different light issues and of course, there are always clouds. Sometimes what you do to reduce haze is an education in itself. If i did not try over and over, i would have missed something that the posts can't teach you. Think about all the conditions in just one shoot. Oh yeh, FUN

You just never know! The moon draws all things to it. This was my last shoot of a busy day. I feel rewarded. Enjoy

I'm curious to hear from people who take close-up, night photos of the moon. Is the appeal strictly technical - a challenge to get the perfect focus and exposure? It seems like other than different moon phases, that once you have a sharp, well exposed image, you're "done" and that your photo probably looks similar to others' results. Or do you feel that the next one could always be better, or is there a mystical or awe-inspiring aspect to the subject that keeps you coming back? Or something I haven't come close to asking here?! Thanks for your input!

Many replies have been posted in the 12 hours since I was last on the site. The number of thoughtful, informative and entertaining posts continue to blow me away, as they have done with some of my other topics. So many great people on this site with fascinating points of view and things to say!

I'm quoting profpb's response because he's an astronomer, so his initial response that I had posted a "dumb, annoying" question is perfectly logical.

I went into the topic with the opinion that close-ups of moon, shot in the same phase and I guess from same vantage point on earth (though I didn't think that through), at NIGHT do look alike to me and that while there may be big technical challenges, there wouldn't be much in the way of an artistic challenge. Yes, my curiosity was indeed aroused!

So my PURPOSE of the question was to have that opinion shown to be uninformed. I was hoping to be enlightened, taught, entertained and stimulated. And hopefully, others would enjoy that ride, as well. I think it's been a great success and I thank you all so very much!!
