I am came across this interesting little butterfly in our garden. It has a second set of dummy antenna and eyes on its tail end. The antenna do actually also appear to move. Probably a defensive mechanism to mislead predators from attacking the business end.
When he opened his wings, which he seldom did and it was very fast and sudden when he did, it was a bright electric blue. Some of this can be seen in the first image.
Would be nice to have someone shed some light on it.
I have a very similar butterfly that visits my yard during summer months. Mine is a grey color and does not have the bright blue.He first caught my eye because of the animated rear antennae. I found the type on the internet last year, but sadly I have forgotten. Very interesting how similar since I live near Birmingham, Al. I will send pictures of mine when and if I can locate. By the way, I love your bird pictures and am ashamed that I haven't replied to one of your previous posts. Keep'em comin' .
