I have a Nikon D7000 and my flash is a SB600. I never use this flash, I have had it for many years. How do I use is as an automatic flash indoors, the directions are very confusing. Any and all help will be welcome. Thanks to all you Hedgehoggers!

Pretty much set the flash on TTL mode and shoot.
You are limited to 250th and below in normal sync mode.
An added bonus- you can shoot with the flash off-camera; controlling it with the pop-up flash. Explore "Commander mode" on your camera under the flash menu.Nikon's CLS system is great.

You should be able to shoot in any of those modes...just remember the 1/250s sync speed.

I am not sure about D7000 but you need to make sure that your camera is not in command mode.

The user manual for that is available on the Nikon USA website.

As far as I can tell the manual is pretty much worthless in addressing this issue (if you're talking about the D7000 manual) convoluted at best as usual.........

why is everyone saying you have to stay in 1/250 mode? Not true. A long as you have your camera set to high speed sync you can use any shutter speed from p to manual. Of course if you put it in Auto ( green) you are leaving it up to the camera totally. I shoot with d7000 with the 600 at 1/1000 all the time.

Actually the "top" synch speed is 1/320 second (in the manual).

That's why I said "normal" sync mode.
I was going for baby steps, but probably shouldn't have mentioned commander mode.

I didn't want to write a paper on HSS.
I already did that in the FAQ:
