G'day Sunrise, I agree with you about showing off your photography skills but surely there's not a great deal of skill in lining up a dead spider and taking what is in effect a snapshot.
There's no creativity involved, no use of light to give impact. It's just point and shoot. Have a look at the magnificent macro work with spiders and insects that others on this site have produced, stunning, beautifully lit images, none of them killed their subject first. It would be the last thing on their minds. They use skill and artistry, something sadly lacking in the photos we're talking about. Kind regards. K..

A less permanent method of sedation for small invertebrates is cooling. Put the specimen, (in this case the spider) in a jar and put it in the refrigerator until it stops moving.
Take it out of the refrigerator and place it in suitable surroundings in a suitable pose. and photograph. If the pose does not look natural, wait until it starts to warm up and assumes a more 'alive' posture.

This works because spiders and other small invertebrates are poikilothermic, (cold blooded) and their rate of metabolism is slowed considerably at low temperatures.

Great point Brian, and thanks for the new word, now I just have to try and work poikilothermic into an after dinner conversation :)

I admit I posted similar bities a few weeks back but I found a new play mate & chose to spend a bit of time with him. He was alive on the jug but heavily sedated with a 10 & a half shoe for the rest.
I tried various poses but my little compact Sony DSC-TX20 is limited in what one can do. It tells the story tho'.

It makes me sad that you killed it :(

Now you're showing the rest of the hog how arrogant you are. Since when is this forum restricted to those with the expertise you have acquired over your 40--50 years of photography. Many are less competent than me but many, like you are more so. That doesn't give you the right to judge. Have an opinion yes, but not judge. I have great fun & have come up with many pic's that are quite good, not NAT GEO quality but I'm quite proud of.
Now I've noticed you joined in November last & you've rubbed some folks up wrong with your bullying attitude.
You've posted a handful of pic's which are comensurate with the expense you went to to get them & in that short time put your self up there as an expert critique. That's not what floats my boat. If you want to bully your way through your criticisms on this global forum that's fine but you're showing the world what you are, an Arrogant Bully.

Dear me, getting personal again, you really are a bundle of laughs.
My original posting was just concerned with the needless killing of something so that you could take a photograph of it. You made it personal by calling me arrogant. You've now descended to the playground level with the childish name calling so I'm out of here.

Bunko, I would probably have done the same thing as you did. Photograph the spider alive and dead. I sure would not have wanted that thing to end up crawling in my bed at night. The art of photography is up to the photographer and the subject and no one should judge that. I give you great respect for posting your creative work and look forward to more. Maybe next time you find a spider, send it the other guys direction. Have a good day.
