Taking pics of streets is very boring.....hell what can asphalt or concrete say.....but if you put a couple of hippies in em then the pics will look pretty good....I agree with mogul a 50mm will work fine...use a 1.4 lens that way you don't have to use flash......nothing pisses off a hippie more than a bright flash in the eye (they think it's morning and hippies hate to get up) good luck and enjoy.

Hippies?
Hippies: They were people that invaded the country in the 60's........now they run it. Back then hippie girls were cute........today they all look like Hillary Clinton.
I like my little Nikon P7100 for "street shooting" !!! Go somewhere in the city and sit down on the park bench or stone wall. Pop out the articulating screen (so you don't look through the viewfinder and look like you are aiming at someone) and set the shutter for interval timing. Put the camera down beside me pointed at a subject. Zoom in or out and press the shutter. It keeps shooting while you look like you are eating lunch or reading a book until you press the shutter release again. It looks like your camera is sitting on the bench beside you, if they even notice it at all !!
By the way.......... You said you joined a group ?? Why don't you ask them what they are using ??? Not trying to be funny, but they may be your best source of info.
Ziza, I have seen this before and agree it's a good start. You have to reach your own comfort level with shotting "strangers" in the open. As in most photography practice practice.....................
Camera phones work the best for street! I've yet to see someone react negatively to a camera phone - DSLR yes!

Which camera do you use?
I have done some street photography in a group also, I used only my 50mm, I could shoot from the hip, the pics were sharp I did a lot of shooting without putting the camera to my eye. We were in Soho in London at the time so had to be very careful.
There were also some colourful characters who wanted to be photographed but this didn't feel like proper street photography then.
I have just purchased a GoPro F2.8 it is so small but perfect for street work, it can take silently 11 fps for stills, does video. No one actually knows you are taking any pics, a perfect little piece of kit.
Good luck.
Hey there. I use a 50mm also but recently bought a 15-85 usm that has a wider angle and coverage and a bit of zoom, rather than using a 50mm and getting in the face of your subject ) I would even explore a 35mm as it has a wider angle also.
From what i have read the 50mm was used as a standard back in 50's Hollywood when people wore hats. Something to do with subject width and height with a hat on x by film width. The ideal would be a 46mm but i think only Pentax do one of these.
Also be aware your cropped sensor on a 50mm will give you more like 65mm roughly so a 35mm would get you to your 50mm ideal if that is what you are after. Although i love my 50mm i tend to the the 15-85 as my universal lens. I have attached a few images shot with this lens. ( hope you dont mind)
Very useful site, another bookmark for the collection Thanks Ziza
i use a 24-75mm ..i get a wide angle and a close up without being too intrusive..of course there will always be that one stickler that will notice you taking a photo of them anyway..just try to blend in..
Another little tip is to black out the camera makers name with marker pen. [This only works on a black bodied camera!]
There's certain places where walking around with a shiny black camera with Nikon, Canon etc... could be foolish.
