Backlit Portraits

I love using backlighting in portraits. Here are two I took where the sun was behind my subject. I used a reflector to help bounce light back on her face. What do you think? Comments/Constructive Criticism?

I really like the first one. I am guessing her dress is really white instead of blue. I see blue. In the second one, I like the composition and the bokeh (as in the first one) but her skin looks pasty and her dress is overexposed.

thanks! the first shot I think the dress is just in a shadow. The second one, I sorta processed it that way because she asked for some of the pics to look "dreamy and ethereal!" so that's sorta what I was going for with that one! thanks for commenting :)

I like dreamy type photos and have taken many of my kids with the sun behind. I didn't buy a reflector until recently, so I used a flash to brighten the eyes a bit. I'm not sure that I'd have the bright sun over her shoulder, although, it didn't seem to blow out the photo too much. Good job, post more. Cheryl

Overall, I like them both, and hate to be critical, but I think the sunlight in #1 is too bright and the large red spot lower/right is just distracting from the subject. Also I would process out the tan line i'm guessing was made by her bikini top on her left side. In the second, I would try sharpening the contract just a tiny bit, despite the request for and ethereal image. Set up wise, the white dress and her pale skin tone may not be the best match.
Cheers.

You have a very pretty model to work with and with the result some nice pictures. I have problems with taking people pictures so I usually do scenic and flowers. The sun is very bright and a graduated neutral density filter rotated and adjusted to dull the sun slightly on the first one would have helped. On the second one the filter might have helped plus I would suggest looking at depth of field as her legs are out of focus. Changing the setting could have possibly brought the her in focus totally. Believe me when I say I have problems with depth of field also. I tried some various forms of editing them and was unable to do anything conclusive. After all this, I still like the pictures. A side profile with the sun behind the model might have been nice and interesting. I have seen several done that way with great success.

Wonderful shots, I have yet to master back lighting so I'm pretty jealous of your outcome ;)

No worries, thanks for the suggestion!
For the first one, I wanted to include the sun and the flare, so that doesn't really bother me. I suppose I could work on her tan line, I didn't really notice it!

For the second one, I actually do have a version that's more contrasty and vivid colors. She preferred this version so I usually show it, but I'll try to see if I can find the other version to share!

I like the sun, too, I was just saying it was a bit too bright for my eyeballs ;-)
