Card Reader or Cable Connector for down loading images - which is better
Card reader only. Saves battery, saves camera wear, and usually much faster. Printers often overlooked as a card reader. I have two Epson printers and both can serve as a card reader. Both much faster than cable connection. Have never had problem removing card from camera.
Rarely remove card from camera, always use the cable to transfer files. Prefer not removing the card any more than absolutely necessary!!
With cameras that use CF cards, it appears much safer also since there is less chance of bending the pins.
On my compact P&S cameras, connecting to computer also charges the battery. On my SX40 I just make sure it has at least 1/2 battery before connecting to computer.

One of the design aspects of memory cards is their intended use---this includes inserting and removing them frequently. CF cards are guided---making them almost impossible to insert incorrectly. You have to use quite a bit of force just to put them in backwards, not to mention touching and then bending the pins at the end of travel inside your camera. Having said this, now look at the mini/micro USB connector and cable---way more fragile. Not much force is needed to break the connector. Of course, at the end of the day, this is all nit-picky stuff that probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference. We all get into a routing and do what we are comfortable doing.

Always use a card reader for both SD and CF cards never had a problem with inserting the cards back into the camera. On my D7000 I also found it is more of a pain inserting the USB cable into it./

I always use the USB cable. There is no hunting for it as it is always in the camera bag. Those that say downloading via cable is slow must have really old computers. My transfers are immediate. I fail to understand the comments that the USB connector is fragile and that not much force is needed to break it. I have never seen a camera with the USB connection broken. There is nothing fragile about those connections. Every camera I have owned with a USB connection has/had the connection recessed in the camera. Just like the connection on a cell phone. One would have to literally 'dig' into the camera and/or phone to damage that connection.
Also, a lot would depend on how often you are downloading photos......I would think most don't perform this constantly on a daily basis.
Card reader for speed. By the time I am removing card, usually pulling batteries for a recharge anyway.

Any day I take pictures, they are downloaded shortly after getting home...... always!!

Usually use a card reader but thought I'd try direct to see whether that was a better way
Hooked my D800 up to download directly to the computer and was told the download would take about 35 minutes - I pulled the plug and got out my reader! Downloaded the 299 JPEG Fine, Large images with the reader in about 6 minutes
Using a Toshiba with Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have had 2 instances where I took 1000+ photos on a trip and was unable to download from the camera w cable. I got a message saying card may be corrupted. I bought a cardreader and it went fine. I now use it when I go overseas and take many important photos; otherwise I transfer with the cable.

with a card reader unless you go thru camera first n delete photos all you have taken will be transfered , as to cable you can delete as you go ( both will take time to delete no matter how you look at it ) I have 2 card readers 1 at home, and 1 i keep in camera bag in case i am using my laptop away or dl photos to someone elses computer, its all 6 of 1 half a dozen of the other
I use a card reader almost exclusively because I was told that if your batteries fail during download it can corrupt the card. It also makes it unnecessary for me to recharge my batteries as often.

Listen to this guy... he is spot on. And remember boys and girls, it is not a matter of IF it happens but WHEN.
I use the cable and tell the software to only download new images. As far as slowness, my Rebel does take a while, esp. when shooting in raw. My 7D just downloads in seconds. My Rebel does seem to download faster since I updated the software.

Ditto. Always the same day.
Is only a particular opinion.
I belive that for those who use their computer to photo works only ,both way are good, but alway is the risk of corrupt data in card after transfer to computer that is why I always reformat card, for those who use computer to browser internet and photo editing is better use card rider internet is full of malware that can afect the camera programs.
Beside if you handle careful the way to take card in and out the cameras and card are enough strong to handled the manipulation.
