Sunsets
I have a lot of sunset pictures, what I do not understand is why do i see a beautiful orangs sun and the pictures do not register in the color i see ? I have a Canon EOS 50D and a canon 40D which i feel are great examples of 36mm digital
I am 80 years old and still love photography.Back in the 60s and 70s I did yearbook photography and really loved the experience, I will continue on as long as i have breath recording photographs not just memories we all forget after a while
What is the white balance set on? Check WB first. After that you may want a UV filter, a CP filter, some ND filters?

Try Cloudy White Balance.
Ah, sunsets, sunrises... glorious things both. However, these are photographically best portrayed with UNDEREXPOSURE. The problem with camera meters is they all tend to move the entire exposure towards middle grey (18%.) By either doing an underexposure bracket, or by manually setting exposure compensation to the negative, the colors and vibrancy you wish to see will appear.
I have attached an underexposed example shot on a Florida beach. Without underexposure, the sun would be a white hot spot, the ocean bright blue/grey, and the sky barely showing any color.

I live in florida and that still is one of the most gourgeous sunrises I have ever seen. Thanks for the tip about underexpousure. I will finally have to usee that exposure compensation button next time. You da man 8-)
That's gorgeous! Nice job!
White balance and metering are everything when taking a picture of the sun. Experiment. Sometimes it works to meter just above the sun before you take the shot.

I seen to have the same troubles, altho pretty, my photos do not have the very same colors that my eyes see at the time of taking them. Florida, Banana River sunrises
That sun rise is a killer, but then you live in FL..
I guess it's a matter of location, location, location
Hi, Were you able to get the colors you wanted years ago when photographing sunsets using film?
Go to menu
WB SHIFT/BKT and adjust toward the red

Well, to be trueful, I can't remember now. Probably back then I was more into taking pictures of my kids than of sunrises. Certainly didn't take any like one does now days with a digital camera. Doubt if I cared much then, it's this wonderful site that has got my juices flowing again. I even deleted at least three hundred photos today, knowing my future will have a better camera and desire to get it right once and for all. LOL
Here's an unedited one from the west coast of Florida with a thunderstorm overhead. The color is natural. Lens is a Nikon 70-300 4.5-5.6 ED VR. It's an FX lens on a D7000 DX, so picture was taken at about 450mm.
Lovely photo. Good job!
I have the same lens. It's nice.
This photo was taken from our deck with a Nikon 200 2.8 VRII lens. I would love to get rid of those wires but then my computer, and nothing else, would work.
August Sunset
I really like taking sunset/sunrise pics. Mine aren't great, but I've gotten a few decent ones.
