About six months or so ago when we were coming back from Dallas and were on the 130 toll road around Austin the speed was posted at 80. I made the comment since speed kills they must be trying to kill us off.

Now I'm sure of it

That's how conspiracy theories get started ....

it's actually OPEC who is behind it all. Here in Florida we are always seeing editorials in the paper about reducing the speed limits to both save lives and save fuel, then, mysteriously, those people are never heard from again.

Coincidence? I think not.

They are going to have to think of something different then this to get me. I don't care what the speed limit is, my old car doesn't go over 70.

U.S. 695 (Baltimore Beltway) has a 55mph limit. Also have road signs that post messages. One constant message is the distance and time from where you are not to some major intersection - such as U.S. 83N - will frequently say 17 miles, 17 minutes - speed limit is 55mph, remember?

Must be some of that "new math" that is getting old by now. But as they say, "close enough for government work."

I used to tell my students that following on someone's bumper at 60 miles/hr they would travel 88 ft in one second and as close as they were following they would run into the vehicle in front of them if it had to stop suddenly. Never convinced them, they believed their reaction time was so quick they didn't need to worry. I try to use the 3 second rule for following distance.

I really enjoy most of the comments on UHG. Your knowledge as kept me from making some mistakes and hopefully will make me a better photographer. Thank you all and hope you all have a great year capturing your dreams.

Post 55 speed limit...drivers still go at least 70.
I wonder how fast the drivers actually go with a 85 speed limit?

True it is careless drivers that cause wrecks not the speed.
I have drove fast for over 60 years never had a wreck.

When you combine speed with careless driving then you have a disaster waiting to happen.

I don't like riding on someone's bumper, but there is always a damn-fool anxious to 'get ahead' that fills the space. I admire competitive spirit on the playing field - not on the road.

How is an 80mph speed limit "trying to kill us off"?

I heard on the news that they were raising the speed limit. I think it's the highest in the country.

I dream about the old days when there were no speed limits in Nevada in areas outside of populated areas. I took full advantage often. After Nixon, a Republican, pushed for the 55 mph national limit I get stopped for 8 mph shy of 4 x that limit! Didn't get cited either. I believe less than 4% of interstate deaths are due to excessive speed. I read that many years ago but may be different now.

I was happy to note, a couple years ago, one of our local radio stations announced they were no longer going to report on traffic accidents. They were henceforth going to report on "collisions", as they said extremely few of them were accidents.
Now, a couple years later, I notice some other stations appear to be following suit.

I never did understand why they call them accidents.
They are not accident they are caused by inattention like texing or stupid drivers.

For 42 years I was a long distance trucker and the company that I worked for said that if you had a wreck it was because you did not do everything you could have and should have to avoid it.

People will say he suddenly stopped in front of me no turn signal or anything.
Well if you had not been so close you would have had time to stop.
In those 42 years I drove millions of miles never put a scratch on a vehicle but some of those idiots sure made it difficult to accomplish that..
