A New Microwave

After many many years, I just learned how to cook a hard boiled egg using my microwave. No more need for a timer or ice bath. Now the egg is done before the toast is ready.

Now you can buy microwaves with settings for everything under the sun, and some not even in the known food groups. My thinking has always been, the more complicated the machine, the easier it is to break down. So I'll look for one with the least number of settings.

The usual things that go bad on microwave ovens are the Magnetron tube, the high voltage transformer, and the door switches. If you have a glass turntable, don't drop it! It costs over $100 to replace one.

We have a full size GE stand-alone microwave we bought 15 years ago that still works great. But we're on our third over-the-stove GE unit in this house. The first one was here for 20 years. The second one lasted five years. We just installed the third one a month ago. They don't make them like they did 25 years ago.

The magnetron is a consumable item. It's life is 3000 hours normally.

Replacement is usually more expensive than it's worth. I've blown out four of them and replaced the whole microwave each time.

yeah you should but I have to test and replace the magnetron in the microwave powered UV lamp used for ink curing. By measuring the current going into the magnetron you can pretty much tell how good the magnetron is.

The Isetta was a fun car. One day after football practice I was going to drive home, and my car was gone. Some of the guys picked it up and hid it behind some bushes.

I've seen pictures of people carrying those cars.

Need? probably not. We took more time on the stove/in the oven.
Time and pot saver- convenience
Not using the stove oven to heat things, time and $

Stouffer's lunches - 5 minutes in the microwave or 45 minutes in the oven.

Yup, definitely one's personal choice.
I choose to go with the microwave.

Yeah... but they always taste better from the oven!

There's no real NEED for a microwave. What did you do before you had one? Do that from now on.

Before the microwave if you want to reheat steamed rice you fry it. That's why they make fried rice to reuse the left over steamed rice.

I'll have to go into town tomorrow and get a microwave. Life is too difficult without one.

Be sure and look at the Panasonic at Sam's -- they seem to hold up really well.

Yeah they have inverter which reduces power more gradually.

What does that mean?

With most microwave when you turn the power level down from maximum it cycles on and off and the cycle is about a few seconds. So at 50% power it run at full power for say 5 sec then off for 5 sec. This could cause problem if you want to do something like melting chocolate. The one with inverter would still do the switching on/off to simulate lower power but it does it at something like 3000 times a second. Basically it converts the power to DC then using the PWM to generate lower AC voltage so it's called an inverter.
