An interview with photonphysicist

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Since I was in college - about 30 years; I think it's a combination of mastering the tools (camera, lights, etc.) and capturing images that tell a story for people to remember.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Most of my learning has been self-taught (books, online, and just going out and taking pictures practicing what I learn) but I have taken classes recently and will take more in the new year.
Mostly I do portraits

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
This shot was for a friend of the family who wanted some pictures of her daughter (yes, I have a model release). I just started talking with the kiddo and she soon got very animated as I took pictures!

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Canon 7D with off camera 430 EXII speedlight and old master canvas backdrop.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
Lighter colored backdrop to provide more contrast to the subject.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Woodworking

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
www.waltjurekphotography.com has many galleries of my work: theater, sports, portraits, weddings...

An interview with wowbmw

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been seriously into photography since I retired 4 years ago. Did some film work before but just documenting events. I wanted to discover my creative/artistic side and chose photography.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Took lots of technical classes for the first year and then a series of classes about capturing your creativity. I am drawn to images that tell stories and so my work is varied since stories occur all around me.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
The subject is my daughter's best friend. My gift to her was images of her first born. Watching her in labor and then finally holding her own daughter was what inspired me to capture this image. This was always the shot I saw while she struggled.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I used a Canon 7D and an EFS 17-55 2.8 at a high ISO no flash needed nor would I have used one in this situation. I'm afraid, I did nicely push people out of the way when the action happened. They forgave me.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
Not sure what I would do differently. It was a tough shot to capture because of tight space and lots happening in the room.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
If I did not do photography, I would have to reach inside me to discover another creative outlet.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
One of my 2012 resolutions was to build a website. Not done it yet but I have a couple of days left in the year.

An interview with OHenry

WOW! You just made my day! What an honor! Thank You!

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I was a new retiree and my husband gave me a Canon Rebel T2i for Xmas 2010. A whole new world has opened up.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I am always reading UHH and articles on photography. Took 2 classes at the local comm. college and 4 GREAT classes on BetterPhoto.com

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
The energy of a Jack Russell Terrier will inspire anyone! I wish I could bottle and sell it.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
My Rebel with its EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens. PP with a blur filter in Photoshop Elements 9. The dog sat in the grass and waited for a release command. I laid on my stomach a good distance away facing her. When I released her with "OK" (to come and get a treat), she ran to me as I clicked furiously. We repeated that action about 100 times over 2 days until I got one I liked. Whew!

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
The focus needs to be on her EYES, not the grass in front but for now, that's the best I could manage.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Serendipity would take care of that.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
No...haven't yet taken that step.

An interview with pinkycat

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been into photography for 14 months. I went through a life changing experience last year and found photography was the thing that was going to get me through.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I've had no formal training. Most of what I've learned has been here on UHH and a few courses on lynda.com.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
This little boy is my friend's grandson. Hehas about a hundred different kinds of smiles. Just had to capture one.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
This one was handheld as his mother was holding him. I just replaced the background.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I'd like to take some real portrait shots of him with a tripod and lighting setup.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I love animals of all kinds. Would love to work with them.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Other than here on UHH, I'm researching setting up a website where I could display my photos, maybe on Zenfolio. For now I have a photo in a contest at http://www.photoswinprizes.com/2012/12/19/the-proud-mama/ (any votes are appreciated).

That is a true picture of joy! #1 is a winner. Great shot! But if you ask me, it's the momma that really got the prize!
