Don't crop from left, but perhaps consider cropping from the bottom For me, the extensive beach area does not add to the impact of the color, light and slow shutter speed. Keeping an inch or so retains the message of there being no one else around.

I agree with Linda, the large area of beach seems to distract from the pier and light. I tried a 5x3 crop and that seems to reduce the wieght of the beach but still displays the light and dark gradiant well.

I wouldn't change a thing.

Sorry. I missed your comment earlier. I decided to make some minor crop adjustments; but I don't think it had that much of an effect on the overall image. Just made things a bit more tidy.

Brilliant shot. My suggestion is leave it just as it is. Lovely

Tony, I'm sorry that I missed your comment earlier. I did decide to crop just a bit to make things a bit more tidy. Thank you for taking a look.

Thank you for the suggestion. I decided to use your suggestion and Linda's idea about reducing some of the beach area. This is what came out; and I really like it better than the original. Cool.

Read the suggestions and saw your changes, however the right end of the pier now hangs in the air. This is visually uncomfortable.

Yep, you are right. it is somewhat distracting. Then, when looking really close at the right side, the pillars are crooked because of the wide angle distortion at the edges. Not sure what I'll end up doing about that. It does not bother me, because I know what it is; but a judge might see things differently. Grrrrr.

Ooops, aren't you glad to be back?

Re aspect, do you have to keep your photos in a specific aspect ratio for competition? Or, is it personal preference, or having to do with availability of standard mat and frame sizes?

I'm interested to discuss, because when I first went from Canon (native 3:2) to Lumix and Panasonic (native 4:3), I threw away pixels on the Lumix and set it to 3:2 because that is what I most loved for landscapes.

Resisted the occasional suggestion to do 16:9 for full screen viewing 'til that actually worked with a few.

But, bottom line is I crop for what I want the image to say, especially given I haven't printed and framed anything for several years.

Our club competitions do not have a requirement for a particular size or aspect ratio. I just thought, for this photo, that I did not want it to be too narrow top to bottom. Turns out that I was able to make the suggested crops and hardly alter the original aspect ratio. Still looks the same to me although I did not actually measure the dimensions.
So, all good. THanks
