Skill and knowledge trumps any hyped manufactured lens. You can get excellent sharpness with most lenses manufactured in the past 45 years if you know what your doing.

You are totally missing the point.

These are the manufacturers' picks as their most significant products over the past 25 years.

Cheers

Let's remember that these guys were talking about the product having a significant impact upon the culture of their companies. So their response might not be the same as upon us, the consumer. The only thing we were not told is how long each of the executives were with the respective company. That would have given more importance to their individual answers.

The most significant camera and lens is the one I am shooting with in Florida wetlands. Knowledge and experience combine with what you are currently shooting to produce the best results possible.
I don't care much for advertising and product promotion, I do read what individual photographers like and how they use their equipment.
I would trust a photographers image more than a camera executives recommendation.

I still have a Nikon FA 35mm film camera. It was revolutionary by Nikon cameras in that it was the first camera to have Matrix/Evaluative metering and had Program metering as well. It is a great camera and it goes nicely with my new to me F4.

The Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Di lens...

I bought one for my Sony A65 DSLR because I wanted a fast lens. I was fine but I thought the focus was a bit soft. However, since I've moved to mirrorless, it's just taking up space in my camera closet. Perhaps I should try selling it on Ebay.

Since this is a list of essentially 1 item per manufacturer...fairly artificial

No it is NOT artificial at all. They asked each manufacturer to list what they felt was their most significant and the manufacturers answered.

Simple as that. Not someone else arbitrarily choosing, but the makers themselves choosing, very valid . What problem do you have with that?

The Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 in Sony E-mount was the most widely purchased E-mount lens in the world, with excellent sharpness. The version two is even better. Loads of pros as well as hobbyists love it.

Cheers and best to you.

I'll stick with my Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8, which still beats all!

This was an 'A-mount' version for the Sony DSLR's. That being said, I'm more than satisfied with my Sony f3.5-5.6 18-135mm lens for my mirrorless, 'E-mount', Sony a6500. Yea, it would be nice to get a bit faster lens, but Sony has done such a good job with their sensors and firmware that shooting higher ISO ranges it not an unreasonable situation, and for close-ups, where I want a shallow depth-of-field, I've still got my Artisans f2.8 60mm macro lens.

I have the Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN for Sony E-mount and love it. This Sigma was released in December 2019. I got mine in January 2020. It is Sigma's best selling lens.

The Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 is also excellent, and was released in April 2018, before the Sigma, and gained immediate popularity among hobbyists and pros alike around the world for its image quality, versatility and affordable price.

The version II of that Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens is improved, and was released in Oct. 2021 but was delayed a bit due to covid. . And a Nikon Z-mount version was released in 2024.

The Sigma is only surpassed by zooms in this range in image quality (by a bit) by the newer Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM II, released in April 2022.

For me the Sigma is 90% of the GM II image quality at half the price, so even though I have other GM lenses, I am keeping the superb Sigma.

A new Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN version two is going to be announced in May, to rival the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM II. It promises to be even better than the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 version one.

New Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 II will be announced in mid May!

Yes I always understood it was an A-mount version.

Use what works for you and be happy.

I have the Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN for Sony E... (show quote)

OK, so I will pony up and buy the new version from Sigma when it appears. But I would also like to see Sony update their 24-105 f4 lens with their new technology. Or, maybe Sigma will give their 24-105 f4 that has a Nikon mount a Sony E mount!

I also own the Sony 24-105mm f4 G OSS lens, bought it back in 2017, love it too. It is equally as sharp as my Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN lens and with fast, quiet AF also.

Of my current 14 E-mount lenses covering 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Viltrox, Laowa, this Sony 24-105mm f4 G OSS is my most used lens. It is also Sony's best selling fullframe lens in the world.

Here a shot that was chosen as a Worldwide Photo of the Week by Sony Alpha Photographers in 2021. Environmental Scientist Brooke Hildebrand in a slot canyon, near Upper Antelope Canyon, Navajo Lands , Page, Arizona, USA. Sony A9, Sony 24-105mm f4 G OSS lens, 24mm, ISO 400, f4, 1/30 sec. handheld, all natural light in the canyon.

Here is a shot I made with my ole Sigma 25-105mm f4 in EF-mount with my Sony A7RII and MC-11 lens adapter, years ago in Edinburgh ,Scotland, as a wedding couple was serenaded by a bagpiper.

And that same combo, on same trip, a shot of Tobermory, the capital of the Isle of Mull , Scottish Hebrides Islands, of a double rainbow at low tide.

I sold the Sigma EF-mount 24-105mm f4 when I got the Sony 24-105mm f4 G OSS in E-mount.
