For the case of disposable batteries like AA and AAA the batteries are made and sold by batttery manufacturers and they have nothing to do with the the devices that use them and thus standardize is bether for them as they can sell more batteries.
For the tools especially these tools are relatively cheap compared to the price of the batteries. So they Milwaukee wouldn't want you to buy Dewalt batteries to run their tools. Just like Canon wouldn't want you to use Epson ink. It's the batteries that they make money. And as far as the tools I see mostly the damage was the rubber cover came off under heavy use with greasy/oily hands but otherwise the tool last a long time. Not so with the batteries.
For the case of disposable batteries like AA and A... (show quote)

If DeWalt and Milwaukee used the same battery, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one brand and then another. Right now, there's no way I would buy anything from Milwaukee. Of course, there are adapters, but I'm sticking with DeWalt.

But the tools sales don't make as much money as batteries sales. So they make the good tools so you buy their tools and then you have to buy their batteries. And no don't use adapter. They do sell third party though.
Any way I don't think I would buy Milwaukee today. I had the Holeshooter since the early 80's. It worked well and was supposed to be warranty for life. A few years ago I had the speed switch went bad and they didn't fix it for me. They charged me $26 for the new switch. Besides the company has been sold in 2005 to Techtronis Industries based in Hong Kong, China.

This thread got me thinking about having a cordless screwdriver. So, I went looking and in less than a minute i found one of the 2 that I have. It is a Black & Decker rechargeable that has got to be more than 15 years old. I plugged it in and I will see if it still works. I used it quite often when I was building computers.

I found the other one, exact same model. Been plugged in a couple of hours and they both work. They have 6 variable speeds and forward and reverse and look to be very well made. We shall see how long they hold a charge.

Yes, I know. Most screwdrivers are cordless, but this is about electric, powered screwdrivers. Although I've owned a couple, I use the old-fashioned kind or a cordless drill if I have a lot of screws to put in or take out.

The Torque Test Channel did a test of these screwdrivers on Sunday, and the cheap Amazon Denali unit was just about the best one tested. At $24, it was faster than almost all the others, although the $120 DeWalt might have edged it out. It I wanted one of these, I would get the Amazon Denali. A higher price doesn't necessarily mean higher quality. He tested only screwdrivers that were shaped like regular screwdrivers, not the pistol kind.

Last month, Project Farm tested cordless screwdrivers shaped like a drill. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxNovtAv6dk

It's true. However, I own lots (and lots) of tools varying in quality from Ryobi all the way up to Festool, Hilti, and Fein.. I can tell you that for me, paying more for a tool, usually results in better quality. Also, some of my Festool tools have served me reliably for over 30 years. I've never owned a ryobi that performed nearly as well for so long.

My Milwaukee cordless screwdriver has been in my toolbox for many years and is my most used tool.
Settings allow for driving the biggest to the smallest screws...and certainly speeds up any project....

A few years ago I purchased a Craftsman cordless screwdriver on impulse. It was interesting but aside from using it a couple times it sat on the workbench. I wound up giving it away.

The cordless screwdriver looked like a normal screwdriver but as soon as you put some torque on a screw the screwdriver would start to turn faster. It really didn't lend itself to controlled driving.

I do use my variable speed drill to drive screws but I have better control of the torque with my finger on the drill trigger, probably because I'm used to the drill and the amount of force I have to put on the trigger to get a given driving speed. And the speed is variable under my control, whereas the cordless screwdriver basically had two speeds: on and off.

The drill/driver gets used for rough work and usually for finer work I use it to get the screw close to seated, then use a hand driver for the final screw-up.
