I'm sure that Burma Shave actually saved some lives. People laughed and then were more careful! It was a REAL "service" to America, even though it was an advertisement and it was one of the RARE "really useful" ones!

A man, a miss,
A car a curve.
He kissed the miss,
And missed the curve. Burma Shave

DON'T STICK YOUR ELBOW
OUT SO FAR
IT MAY GO HOME
IN ANOTHER CAR. Burma Shave

You are aware that you can purchase a book with the story of the Burma Shave signs. It's available as a used book on the internet.

The only one I saw was in upstate NY driving with my father,

30 Days
hath November
April June and
the speed ofender

Years later I was in the transportation Museum in Boston and they had the same verse on the wall.

Oh yes I remember those signs and as a matter of fact I have a booklet with lots of the sayings in there although it's pack and I don't know which box but it's in there somewhere. If I can find it I'll share some of them with you.
Thanks for the memory, David

In the 50’s, driving from outside Cincinnati to grandma’s up in rural NE Ohio we passed a lot of the Burma Shave signs along with barns painted “Mail Pouch Tobacco” and “See Rock City.” It was sure a different world then.

Loved them! And I spent my grade school years on Lookout Mountain TN, the location of Rock City.

An excellently informative and amusing book, "The Verse by the Side of the Road" by Frank Rowsome Jr. is available from Amazon. It tells the story of the sign crew. And it lists all of the jingles.

Amazing that something as big as Burma Shave and Stuckey's could just disappear. Stuckey's was huge and especially in the Southwest along the interstates. Buildings are still there in some cases but Stuckey's is gone. I do not miss their famous pecan rolls. That white center was terrible.
