Cruising around and through Europe Part 51: Lake Como part 3

We started a rainy day with a great breakfast buffet at our hotel, the Grand Hotel Imperiale Resort & Spa in Moltrasio, on Lake Como. This was the first of our two full days at Lake Como before departing for our Rhine cruise. After breakfast, we took a Viking coach to Como, a short drive of about 8km. We walked to the funicular that we took up to the town of Brunate to get views of Lake Como. In spite of the rain, the views were beautiful. After the funicular, we went on a Viking guided walking tour of Como, the largest city on its namesake lake, with a population of about 85,000. Our tour included a visit to the Como Cathedral, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta; Duomo di Como. The cathedral is one of the most important buildings in the region. It is commonly described as the last Gothic cathedral built in Italy. Construction on it, on the site of the earlier Romanesque cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore, began in 1396, 10 years after the foundation of the Milan Cathedral. The construction works, started under the supervision of Lorenzo degli Spazzi di Laino, did not finish until 1770 with the completion of the Rococo cupola by Filippo Juvarra. The imposing west front was built between 1457 and 1498 and features a rose window and a portal between two statues of Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger, natives of Como.

Great set Dennis with a nice combination of exterior and interior shots of the cathedral which we missed on our visit there.

Thanks Mark, I'm glad you enjoyed my photos and that I was able to "fill in the details" of what you weren't able to see on your visit.

Another fine set Dennis. This is the second church that you have posted with chairs instead of the traditional church pews. Just strikes me as odd.

Thank you Don. My previous thought was because of the ornate floor. I wonder if it's to give them more flexibility? I'm open to anybody commenting on why.

I've attached a "preview photo" from my next series of posts of our month long road trip around Italy last year. Note there are pews and I'm taking the photo from the back of the church.
