And we're on a site where many people have paid multi-thousands of dollars for camera gear to produce results they could have got with an old Kodak Brownie or a cheap cell phone.

It's their money, and they choose what to spend it on, and should be able to do so without criticism from others. $15k on a watch? Go for it. $15k on camera gear? Stamp collections? $15k Bottles of wine? Have at it. But buying luxury goods which you can't afford is a moron's game.

Personally I think people who buy Hummers (and many other things) must be idiots, but it's their money, their business, and who am I to criticise their choices?

If you ever go on a cruise to the Caribbean, you can buy a fake Rolex on almost every Island. Cost usually is about $200.00

I just don't understand the fake watch thing. You're not buying the technology, not the history, just 'impressing' (gullible) people with a the idea that you can afford something.

And gullible not because you 'fool' them, but gullible because they're impressed by something as silly as a watch.

I own more than one Rolex because I like them, not because i care one way or the other about what anyone else thinks. You like my watch? Great! You don't? Fine too. But best is when you don't even notice at all.

I own and wear a gold Omega Automatic, not for vanity but because it was a gift from my maternal grandparents on my college graduation.
Watch is engraved with love.
This is more than a watch, it is a reminder of a loving Grama and Poppa who gave me such a happy part of my childhood.

Absolutely 100% perfect reason for wearing, enjoying, such a timepiece. Like a great family photo, it's a heartwarming memory, something dearly personal only to you, not merely mechanical art.

For my 40th birthday, I received a Rolex. While I have had it cleaned a couple of times and the crystal replaced a couple of times and the bracelet replaced a couple of years ago because the hinges were wearing and I did not want to lose it, I have had no problem with it. Today . . . 41 years later . . . it is worth many times its purchase price. And it keeps excellent time.
Don't wear it every day because I sit at my desk every day with a clock on my wall, my computer and my phone. But if I leave the ranch, I probably have my watch on my arm and my class ring on my right hand. I like the feel and the memories associated with both. I've had a couple of knock-off Rolexes given to me. I just passed them on. I do have an old Timex that I use when I'm rolling up hay or running a chainsaw. It just keeps on ticking also. And I have a President Regan watch that has a little age on it. Has his photo on it and a nice note. It is my most valuable watch I guess. Have a good day. And thanks for sparking the memories of an old man.

If you just want a watch to flash around in order to impress folks then do it right with a Patek Philippe Grand. Have you shopped at Amazon for used watches? Yep, they got em!

The Patek is a great watch. However, IMHO most people wouldn't recognize it as an ultra-high priced watch.
For that you can go to the "Aeternitas Mega4" by Franck Muller who's known as the "King of Complications"
It comes in at a cool $2.5 million.

$2.5 million? Must be the Walmart economy model.

The Patek Grandmaster Chime is $31 million, but even that is eclipsed by a Graff Diamonds watch at $55 million, although the latter is more diamonds than watch.

Yes, the Patek and Graff make everything else look like chump change. However, I was talking about watches you can go down to the corner jewelry store and buy.
There is only one each Patek and Graff (which BTW is beyond ugly in my opinion.)
They were created to advertise the brand.

About 30 years back in Lindsay, Ontario, a jeweler showed me a Rolex 'knock off' and showed my the action of it. The workmanship was impeccable.

I usually wear the real Rolex around town, or here in the States and Canada. But if I go to Europe or South America I wear the "Knock off" .

Someone who wants a Rolex doesn't want something just to tell time. While it's very accurate for a mechanical watch the accuracy isn't better than a cheap quartz watch.

I bought my Rolex GMT Master back in 1965 in Gibraltar. Cost then $300.
That was way before there was anything digital. Absolutely I needed a good accurate watch as I was working in Africa.
Still keeps on ticking and I never take it off my wrist, even for showering. The bezel has faded. Only ever had it serviced once

Hey Old Coot. Thanks for the testimony. My Rolex and I have been together going on 50 years and has not failed me. I do not wear it as a fashion statement. It is a watch that works.

I guess I’m a mix of old school and new school. I have a smart phone, capable of 5G, as well as a wristwatch. There are several things I need to keep track of on a timed schedule and I can glance at the wristwatch much quicker than pulling out my phone. To each his own.

Right on, do your thing. I have several watches, if you want a neat one (one of my favorites) look into Casio G Shock, Solar, Atomic. They have lots of features to choose from, lots of variations. My watch does all its features by its self and is set to 2099. Next check Citizen, lots of neat features. An Atomic watch is always the right time. Have fun enjoy your watches. They are just fun.
