I painted this Giraffe last night with Clip Paint Studio which fits my style of Tole Painting.

When I decide on a subject, I start the process with a quick loose sketch. I like to think of the subject as a combination of shapes. This Giraffe is essentially rectangles, a square, and triangles. An advantage of working in layers is that I can turn the sketch layer on or off as the painting progresses.

The next step is to choose the color palette and lay in blocks of color to define the rough shape and darker tones to represent where shadows will appear.

Once that is done, I blend the blocks of colors to fill in the voids between them paying attention to the contours of the Giraffe. I add paint as I continue this process.

The detailed areas such as the eyes, nose, and mouth are next and each goes on its layer (layers are your friend). When these are complete, the next step I use is to apply shadow and highlight areas using multiply and overlay layers.

Then comes the little tweaks like individual hairs and areas needing a touchup. The final step is to create the background layer which in this case was a simple black fill layer.
