Is that a pressurized fuel tank?

It is pressurized. You can see in the first shot what appears to be a hand operated pump and a pressure gauge sitting on top of the tank. I assume that during pit stops a pit crew member would make sure adequate pressure was being maintained.

I can just imagine the ride-along mechanic furiously pumping to pressurize that huge fuel tank while the driver was clipping along at 100mph+! Roll cage??? what's that?

Hi, Bob.

I assume that a pit crew member, during pit stops, would check that pressure gauge sitting on top of the tank and pump the tank up if needed.

The French auto company, Ballot, wanted to boost its recognition world wide as a serious performance car manufacturer. They developed a car specifically to race in the 1919 Indy 500. It had a sleek design and advanced suspension and braking systems. The engine was an in-line 8 cylinder of 4816 cc. It had double overhead cams and 4 valves per cylinder. It put out 140 HP. Top speed was right at 105 MPH. It was running very well in the race, leading at times. Something went awry with the rear wheels ( I'm not sure what ) and it was retired from the race.

Nice shots and interesting car. Very advanced for that time. The following link gives more detailed info about the car and the race. https://automedia.revsinstitute.org/the-destructive-indianapolis-track-narrative-of-1919

Great set, Tom, plus it has my initials on the gas tank.

Thanks, Earnest.

I had not picked up on that. This is your chance to strike gold. Maybe the laws prohibiting the unauthorized use of someone's initials offer protection in this case. I say sue the dogs.

If that's the case, Tom, I would have to sue Bugatti too, Etore Bugatti would turn over in his grave, LOL.

Thanks, Don.

When I stood next to that car, looking into the cockpit, and realizing that this was the environment a driver was going to have to endure for a long grueling race....it seemed impossible.

Tom, it's rather difficult to determine from these photos whether the race car accommodated a ride-along mechanic as was common during that time period. One of the mechanic's duties would be to use the visible handpump to keep the fuel system pressurized and the motor fed.
