Some will remember that I recently had a problem with my Microwave oven, after burning another one up.
My neighbor was busy helping his daughter off in another town (moving, I think) and the next night after he got home, he came and looked at it, couldn't find anything wrong with it. Next day, the lights started flickering and the light in my computer room made a LOUD pop and blew out. Kitchen lights went out too. I went out to check the breaker and it was tripped. When I reset it, the breaker popped and everything blew out. The next day, it was already getting dark but he came and checked everything. He didn't find anything in the dark. No electricity for 2 days. He came back to check something outside and said Call Alabama Power. When I called them, he took the phone and told them the service entry cable was broken, hanging by a very thing string and had already been spliced 3 times...I needed a new line run. That fixed some of it but then he found that the breaker to the kitchen was bad and replaced it. Before, the microwave smoked after 30 seconds. I finally tried it again this morning and it didn't smoke.
None of it makes sense to me but it's not supposed to me. I ever really wanted to know anything about electricity. Scares me to death!!!!
Just though I'd let you all know the outcome.
Thank you all for your suggestions and efforts to help. Very much appreciated.

It's the things that scare you that you need to know about. Usually after you learn about them the fear goes away.

Your microwave probably burnt from over amperage. The thicker the wires, the more amperage it could handle. The simplest way to explain it is using a water hose & the flow coming out of it. The microwave drew more amperage (water-flow) than the incoming power could handle. = smoke !!!

I am just very hopeful that is stays fixed. It's always good to see so many of the "hogger" family winning to help.
Thank you!

It may be possible that I have more problems yet to be found. Time will tell.

Electrical problems can be dangerous. You might want to have a master electrician take a good look at your house to diagnose problems. You microwave should not smoke!! How old is your house and electrical system?

Sorry to hear about your trouble with electricity. Hope that it is now resolved. I am having a somewhat smaller problem than your problem, with ALEXA. Yes the one that turns our lights on and off, etc. This problem just started this morning and I don't how it will play itself out. Nothing I know how to do about it except just wait.

Thank you Morry. Sorry you too are having trouble. if Alexa every gives me any trouble, I unplug her and leave for for about 10 minutes and plug her back in and she's all well again.

The Alexa won't smoke and there is no danger but it can be quite troublesome to set it up again.

My parrot confused Alexa. It's rather funny, but the bird hates her.

My thoughts exactly! You're a lucky gal. Happy for you-

I am truly blessed Bubbee. I was so sure I was going to have to spend $10,000 or more to have this house rewired and it wound up costing me nothing.

I had a problem with the neutral power line. The squirrels had chewed away all but 1 strand of the neutral line. Voltage was drifting from 120 volts to near 240 volts.

Squirrels are so cute but they can really cause some serious damage. I hope you have no more of that.

Wow! Yes, I would be nervous also. No word about the problem from Alabama Power? Are you sure that no one has tried to steal power from your power line in order to get power for free? Have you noticed power being off during the night when most everyone is sleeping, or clocks needing resetting like is needed after your power is off for awhile? That part about the main power line having been spliced 3 times is strange and sounds fishy. Does the power company have any records showing that they had to splice your line in the past? I would keep watching outside around your place for awhile. Something sure sounds funny. Be careful and keep us posted if anymore funny things happen. Oh, make sure you don't have squirrels making nests around some of your power lines too!

Thanks Walter. Good advice for sure. I wondered about that too, because a drug addict moved into a house next door (opposite side from the helpful neighbor) and I found an extension cord plugged into my carport early one morning, but I got that stopped right away. He moved and there are some great neighbors there now, but now that I have had that happen once, I will always check that.

I have always been afraid of electricity Steve, but I hope my problem has been fixed and think that may be the case because now that they replaced the service entry cable, the microwave isn't smoking any more.

My house is 108 years old, all renovated just before I bought it. My first thought was that they must have done something wrong, but all seems well after the new line was put up.

I really appreciate all the input, advice and suggestions I got from this geat hedgehog family.

Just as a precaution, I hope you have fire alarms throughout your house, esp. considering its age. We just had a new house built 2 1/2 years ago and I think we've got about 11 that were required by code, and they are LOUD!!!! No sleeping through those!!! Take care and stay safe!!!
