Glad it worked out for you Jo. A fire could have been a real issue!

Don

Thank you Don. My home in Tn burned in 1987. It's a horrible experience. I pray I never have to go through that again.

Some will remember that I recently had a problem with my Microwave oven, after burning another one up.
My neighbor was busy helping his daughter off in another town (moving, I think) and the next night after he got home, he came and looked at it, couldn't find anything wrong with it. Next day, the lights started flickering and the light in my computer room made a LOUD pop and blew out. Kitchen lights went out too. I went out to check the breaker and it was tripped. When I reset it, the breaker popped and everything blew out. The next day, it was already getting dark but he came and checked everything. He didn't find anything in the dark. No electricity for 2 days. He came back to check something outside and said Call Alabama Power. When I called them, he took the phone and told them the service entry cable was broken, hanging by a very thing string and had already been spliced 3 times...I needed a new line run. That fixed some of it but then he found that the breaker to the kitchen was bad and replaced it. Before, the microwave smoked after 30 seconds. I finally tried it again this morning and it didn't smoke.
None of it makes sense to me but it's not supposed to me. I ever really wanted to know anything about electricity. Scares me to death!!!!
Just though I'd let you all know the outcome.
Thank you all for your suggestions and efforts to help. Very much appreciated.

Document Everything and submit a claim to your power company.
I am so glad that you are OK, and that makes me . . .

Your microwave probably burnt from over amperage. The thicker the wires, the more amperage it could handle. The simplest way to explain it is using a water hose & the flow coming out of it. The microwave drew more amperage (water-flow) than the incoming power could handle. = smoke !!!

Sorry to hear about your trouble with electricity. Hope that it is now resolved. I am having a somewhat smaller problem than your problem, with ALEXA. Yes the one that turns our lights on and off, etc. This problem just started this morning and I don't how it will play itself out. Nothing I know how to do about it except just wait.

The Alexa won't smoke and there is no danger but it can be quite troublesome to set it up again.

My lights got really bright but flickered, then went dim, then blew out. I put my bird in her small travel cage and put her with a bag of clothes and purse by the front door and slept on the couch in case I had to get out in a hurry. I was relieved that I didn't have to spend $10,000 or more to have the house rewired.
I owe my neighbor big time.

My thoughts exactly! You're a lucky gal. Happy for you-

I had a problem with the neutral power line. The squirrels had chewed away all but 1 strand of the neutral line. Voltage was drifting from 120 volts to near 240 volts.

Wow! Yes, I would be nervous also. No word about the problem from Alabama Power? Are you sure that no one has tried to steal power from your power line in order to get power for free? Have you noticed power being off during the night when most everyone is sleeping, or clocks needing resetting like is needed after your power is off for awhile? That part about the main power line having been spliced 3 times is strange and sounds fishy. Does the power company have any records showing that they had to splice your line in the past? I would keep watching outside around your place for awhile. Something sure sounds funny. Be careful and keep us posted if anymore funny things happen. Oh, make sure you don't have squirrels making nests around some of your power lines too!
