they get $400.00
Only if they don't send you the camera and in this case I think it's likely what it is.
My real question is -- if Mercari doesn't release the money until the product is received, how do they get the $. I'm missing something. Since I'm not going to try to buy it -- I guess this will remain one of the mysteries of life.
Scammers have to get smarter. The body alone sells for $2,000. Offering it with an equally costly lens for just $400 shouts, "This is a scam! Send my money!"

Ken, I have never used the web services of Mercari
But I do "Trust" the reviews on "TrustPilot.com" -- and they don't look good
....... Overall 'average rating' of 1.7 stars out of a total of 5 stars.. with over 19,200 reviews
.......... I think I would pass.. Personal Opinion
See the below screenshot and/or go to the Trust Pilot website and check...

Based on the numbers of reviews provided in the photo, 1.7-stars does not compute. The actual number calculates out to 3.7-stars! With 57% giving a 5-star rating, the average would still be over 3 stars even if the remaining 43% were giving only a single star. Math must be hard for some people/machines.

I am just a 'messanger'...

... You might wish to discuss that with TrustPilot ???

Sure thing Goldstar46. TrustPilot certainly needs a lesson in mathematics or a 'fix' for their AI programming.

Yes they should offer it for only slightly less than the typical selling price. Make it looks like a good deal but not too good to be true.

Anyone ever deal with a company called Mercari?
It's supposed to be a consumer-to-consumer site. They claim that their policy is that they don't process your payment until three days after you receive a product, and that you can return it within the three-day period.
I've seen a few websites say they are legit.
Sounds Great.
They have a BBB rating of A
Sounds Great.
Their customer rating on the BBB site is 1.06 stars out of five (over 1000 reviews). WHAT? Given that some people misclick, I wouldn't have thought that was possible.
I see a listing for a Nikon Z 7 ii today for Under $400 -- with the 24-70 claiming that it has about 300 clicks. What????
My first, second and third reactions are this has got to be a scam. But if I'm not charged until I receive the item, I'm not sure I'm seeing what it is.
Anyway -- comfortable in the belief that if it looks too good to be true, it almost certainly is. I'm not going to bite.
But does anyone know what the play on the part of the seller is here.

If a company is legit enough to allow payment by PayPal, I'll buy from them; otherwise, forget it!

I am a top rated seller on Ebay for over 10 years. The buyer is very protected, as soon as the buyer wants to return an item, their money is reimbursed. No questions asked.
I have found it a very safe place to buy products, the buyer is always protected.
But you must follow the directions, and they are very simple.
Even a 5 year old could do it.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
You get your money back but unless you are dealing with one of the major corporations, the return postage is on you. For a heavy item like a super-zoom lens, that could run as much as 40.00.

They ship you an empoty box so they get proof of delivery. Then it's up to you to prove that you did not get what you ordered.

My credit card was fraudulently used to purchase crap on Mercari. I called Amex and they reversed the charges immediately. Then received the goods a few days later. Something very strange. Maybe it was the seller selling their stuff to me using my CC?
Was truly crap as well.
I would stay away.
I have bought quite a few cameras and lenses on Mercari, and a few other things. At least 50% of the cameras and lenses were bad. But, if the seller lists them as good, Mercari is good at refunding your money. But three days is all you have to get it done. And they require photo proof of the faults, not always possible of course. You can’t demonstrate that a film counter doesn’t work. I never bought anything there without asking for and usually getting 20% off. The photo sellers are amateurs who are also selling baseball cards and shoes. And yes, there are scams. But not by Mercari. I got a really great Olympus OM1n with lens for $50. And a Minolta XE-7 with 50mm f1.4 for $60. I haven’t sold anything on the site. I prefer eBay. I have been selling on eBay for 20 years and have 100% positive feed back on more than 1,600 transactions. eBay and Mercari are fine. Just use common sense. And have fun.

A 5 year old maybe, but what about a caveman?
