A drain hole

Sometimes, things are so common that you barely see them. They are just there. Before I started back with my photography, I walked by the rockwall countless times and never paid attention to these drain holes. Following my return to photography, my eyes opened again, and my natural curiosity began to peak. I've often wondered about these holes, and more than once stopped to look inside. However, it took a little squirrel to open my eyes to see the drain in an entirely different light.

As I was walking back to my apartment, I spotted a squirrel on the rockwall gazing out over the lawn. I greeted him, but he appeared extremely shy, so I gave him his space and quietly chatted instead. I guess he wasn't in the mood for company because the next thing I knew, he was headed into the drain. Sadly, I missed the entrance. I quickly looked in but saw nothing, so I decided to step back. Sure enough, he poked his head back out a few seconds later. Evidently, this particular hole has a bit of an underground nature. Since then, I have looked at the numerous drains, and some have a cap in the back, while others don't. Wondering if we might have a secret underground world. Does anyone remember the old TV series Beauty and the Beast? It had a secret underground world! Sadly, he never came out for a peanut, so as always is the case, I left some on top!

Hope you enjoy!

Great set!!!
The drains are to remove any water that could and does build up and eventually cause the wall to fail, due to hydraulic pressure and freezing.

Thanks, glad you liked! Good to know. Would be a huge mess if these walls failed!
