I couldn't name one major league baseball player today, but I knew all of them in the 1950s. Another one has crossed that big Home Plate in the sky. He was 97.

I remember “Oisk” as the Bums’ fans called him in the ‘50s. May he Rest in Peace.

I followed the Dodgers as best I could in the ‘40s and ‘50s (until they moved) on the radio from my home 90 miles away in the Catskill mountains. Ironically, my mother entered me in a drawing and I won a trip to see the Yankees play - I booed them. I haven’t had much interest in baseball since.

When I lived on Long Island, it was easy to get to a stadium to see a game live. I always thought it was funny that guys listened to the game on the radio or watched it on little TVs while they were in the stadium.

I met him, he was a very nice man. My son asked what grip he used for his curveball. He not only showed my son, he also gave him a 15 min lesson on how to throw it. Great story teller, a great ambassador for the game of baseball.

Erskine is/was from neighboring Anderson, Indiana, our county seat. He was a great guy who did much for the city of Anderson his entire life. You may not know that he was a great harmonica player, and often played in a local band.

Today, a pitcher would charge your son for that.

We had a pro ballplayer come to town a few years ago. People had to pay to get in to see him and then pay for his autograph. I guess $5 million a year doesn't go very far.

Sad to see him go. I was a Dodger fan in the 50’s as a kid and can’t count the number of games I went to Ebbets field. Living in Queens, there was no better day in the summer then my friend Richie and me taking the subway out to Brooklyn and watching a doubleheader. We would get there early to watch the practice then watch two games and then get home pretty late. Absolutely loved it!
Here is a picture of me and Richie. I’m on the right and I’m nine years old.

Very nice. I remember dressing up when I was a kid. I even had a fedora.

We were only in suits because it was a Sunday after church and we went straight to the subway to get to the ballpark.

It was a left turn on Bedford and a walk to Ebbets Field. Get in line for the cheap seats. Watch Dem Bums play like the champs they were. Carl was the last of the Boys of Summer.
Peace.
