Pittsburgh Runaways

Pittsburgh has had quite a bit of rain the last few weeks. As a result, a number of barges (26) got away from their moorings just down river from the point (confluence of the Allegheny and Monongehela rivers forming the Ohio River). There are several locks and dams on these three rivers for flood control and to maintain navigable water levels. It turns out they're also good barge traps. These images show six of the barges trapped against the Elmsworth dam by the current just a couple of miles down river from Pittsburgh.

Thanks for the shots. I heard about the barges early this morning. They are putting enormous amounts of shear stress on those supports designed for compression stress.

These are good images BurghByrd. Having worked in the marine industry my entire working career, in the New Orleans area and below, these images interest me very much. I read about the breakaway today and understand the barges belong to Campbell Transportation Company and your images confirm this. Thanks for posting.

I wonder I’d the dam designers took the force of multiple runaway barges into account in their calculations.

Thanks to all who replied. A few photo related lessons learned for me on these worth passing on. I had to go back a second day to get decent photos; the first set were not very clear for reasons that weren't immediately obvious to me. I returned the next day with the same kit, a tripod and another camera and lens. On both days it was windy and even on the tripod I could see the vibrations caused by it and had to time the shutter release (cord) for a calmer moment. My best hand held techniques can't match it. I also learned that the Nikon Z8 with 100-400 Z lens can hold it's own compared to the GFX 100 with GF 100-200 lens. That surprised me.
