Just like mine. They have only lasted (and are still going) 5 months (latest purchase) and 4 years (first purchase) without fail. (I) don't know where I screwed up.

Do you have the 4tb produced after 2022? Those are the ones known to fail. Samsung admits it and is working on a software fix. There are several types of 4tb Samsung drives. Some are better than others. The ones with the handle are problematic.

I maintain three external backup drives. One is always connected to my computer. The second backup drive is in my safe. The third one is in my briefcase, so if I am someplace without my laptop and I need to access a file, I can use the back drive on any computer. I use Second Copy backup software. Unlike some backup software that compresses the backups into a single file that you need proprietary software for, Second Copy literally copies the files to an external drive that is readable by Windows Explorer. If this sounds time-consuming, it literally takes a minute or two to make each backup, as long as you do incremental backups.

If I am lucky, very lucky, it may only cost me $1000.00 or so.
File Savers wanted $4500.00.
I’m an idiot. For now, avoid Sandisk.

I do too, except this one time. I thought I had it backed up. Worst computer mistake in 42 years. I knew better.

. Ugh. In the old DOS days, I did a lot of computer consulting with my partner, who was a programmer. You may be able to have some of that recovered or achieve partial success with an older back up. We are all potentially prone to “it won’t happen to me“ thinking. I’d be willing to bet that you’ll never make this mistake again, and some other UHH participants may benefit from this. Good luck with this!

One more thought. Presumably, your computer failed in some way, which is why you need the back up. Your best and least expensive option may be to have the computer hard drive recovered. There are computer labs all over the country, particularly in large cities. Perhaps the best solution is research “forensic“ computer labs. These labs have specialties that include data recovery in commercial litigation and criminal cases. It’s more common than you may think. My experience is that I have never had the solution for this sort of problem fail. For example, if the hard drive controller fails or is sabotaged, these labs just remove the hard drive and read it directly. For SSD drives, I don’t know what the alternatives are, but I would bet there are viable options. I doubt that this is going to be very expensive, because you are not trying to solve this in litigation, which can add significantly to the costs.

Oh, I knew the drive would fail. That’s why I always had a backup drive; except when I went to find it, it wasn’t there. Oops!
The drives aren’t labeled on the outside. They will be from now on.

You are not an idiot. Sandisk was a goto for a long time. We started hearing issues about certain drives and mfg dates around 1-2 years ago. When did you buy your 4TB drives? And, yes, I have switched to Samsung T7s.
Not all Sandisk drives are affected. Not easy to determine though.

I switched at the wrong time.
Currently, the drive is playing peek-a-boo, it’s there until it isn’t. While it’s there I am scrambling to get everything off, before it goes completely.

I think you meant to say Sandisk? Not Samsung?

Is that the American way?

Hmm, not sure this is an "American" phenomena. A prior more dangerous example I think of is the Takata (a Japanese company) airbags which were exploding in cars. It took many years for Takata to acknowledge the problem. Am sure there are many other examples, some of which are American and some foreign companies who denied problems that people were having. It is one of the reasons to read the posts in various forums like UHH, people will post about problems they have had. Some of which may be the fault of the poster, some of the product.

I am also having problems with a 4 TB SanDisk SSD drive. At this point, I have not lost data because I am compulsive about backup. My problem is that the drive disconnects while the Mac is in sleep mode. This causes Photoshop to crash because the PS scratch file is on the SSD drive. It also causes problems across my home network. Even if the SSD drive is reconnected when PS is accessed, PS still crashes. I will add that this SSD drive has already been replaced under warranty.

Thank you. Good warning. Sorry you had a serious problem with the Sandisk. Was my go to. No longer

There have been many reports on the failures of the Sandisk SSDs over the last few years. But good for you to refresh people's memories. When I bought my SSDs, I went with Samsung. There are a number of other manufacturers as well so personally, would not go near a Sandisk SSD (I used to only use Sandisk memory cards by the way). Sorry this happened to you.
One recent report:

Yikes, I'm using a 2 TB unit, but also have my pics backed up on a Toshiba HD. Looks like I'll be changing strategies...I also have a cloud backup "Backblaze"
