Canon's batteries are made by Panasonic so they are already "off-brand". I use Canon, Watson, and Power2000 batteries in my R5, and previous Canons with no issues at all. I hear that Wasabi are are also highly rated. The slight difference in voltage is just dependent on how the manufacturer rates them. It means nothing. Some batteries don't interface properly because they have not secured the rights from Canon to use its proprietary chip. Those I would stay away from because they may be cheaply built.

Actually...my Canon LP-E17's are labelled as being made by Sony

Apparently Canon buys from more then one producer. I haven't used any LP-E17's in years so I wasn't aware of that. My LP-E6N's and NH's are all from Panasonic. Thanks for the info.

Thank you also....I wasn't even aware that Canon didn't make the batteries.

Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus don't make batteries. Sony and Panasonic make batteries.

I had that problem, not accepting non-Sony OEM batteries with my DSLR's. However, with my Sony mirrorless cameras, an a6000 and an a6500, I haven't had that problem. In addition to a couple of Sony OEM batteries, I've got two slightly higher-capacity batteries from SR (Sun Room), which have been fine, and one high-capacity battery from DSTE (I had a few of these, but all but one died). My latest purchase was a couple of batteries from Duracell, virtually the same capacity as the Sony OEM's. Note that Sony OEM batteries are 7.2V while all the others are rated at 7.4V. Also the Sony OEM's capacity is listed as 1020mAh, the Duracell's are listed as 1030mAh, the two SR's are 1150mAh and the single remaining DSTE is rated at 1950mAh.

The voltage 7.2 or 7.4 and the capacity in mA don't mean a whole lot. The voltage of the 2 cell Li-Ion is from 8.4V to 7.2V from fully charged to fully discharged. So the manufacturers can choose a to list it as 7.2 or 7.4 makes no different. The capacity of the battery rated in mA depends a lot on how you test them. If you test them with a light load it generally gives higher capacity result than with heavy load.

I have been using Wasabi batteries in my D810 for years with no problems. They have a greater energy capacity than Nikon batteries, charge well, hold charge.

Try a company called Smallrig thru Amazon.

I have a pair of those. Theyre not a solution to the warning screens in my Sonys, but they do work well otherwise.

Good idea.
The peace of mind you get for NOT buying the off brand is worth the extra price you pay for the camera brand's battery.

I use the money I save to buy more batteries.

Also, my problem with camera brand batteries is swelling up so theyre hard to extract ... at which point acoarst I junk them.

Check out Watson batteries. They are superb and last even longer than the Canon batteries and also less expensive.

LFingar stated that Wasabi batteries were highly recommended and when I viewed them on the computer they looked just like the SmallRig batteries which were also recommended.

Because I am only looking for a backup battery I deciede to give the Wasabi a try. After I got it, charged it and insurted it, it workd just like the Canon. I was also able to view the Menu/Battery Information. Here is a link to it

So, Thank you LFingar for your tip.

Unlike Wasabi, Smallrig is a Chinese company and thus I think they are better in sourcing the batteries which are made in China in any case.
