Yes, PayPal, and pay the 3% because if you cheat and do the free “friends & family” mode you have no recourse if something’s not right, especially important if you’re the buyer.

What you say about recourse regarding PayPal friends and family is correct. Having said that, I have conducted all my transactions on UHH via PayPal friends and family (actually there was one check on a small item when seller did not have PayPal). Whether it is warranted or not (and I think it is) I tend to trust members of the UHH community more than I would if I were sending funds for transactions on another site. In addition to the savings of the 3% for the seller, PayPal does not collect 7% sales tax from me for the transaction of a used item. Perhaps someday I'll be stung, but so far so good.

So your bragging on a public forum you're a tax cheat. So much for HONEST UHH members

I'm ready to part with some old photo gear. What's the preferred safe and fair payment method when you have to ship your items, as opposed to meeting in person? I don't have PayPal, Venmo, or any of those.

Then get one of them. PayPal is the most popular, but I use Venmo more. As far as safety goes, as an absolute it doesn't exist when dealing with the internet. That hasn't stopped them from being successfully used millions of times per day. And the small fee (receiver only) is well worth it.

Try US Postal Service money orders. Can be used in multiples for more expensive items. Simple

I have found Zelle to be every bit as secure as PayPal and I am not giving them any money. I switched about 2 years ago from PayPal and haven't needed to look back.

Don't know about The US but in Canada the "E" transfer is so easy and safe and the recipient gets paid at once.

Despite being old, or because of it, I have patience. Most people do not.
I would suggest that you do accept a personal check, after telling the buyer that there will be a multiple day delay while the money clears (consult your bank). Most scams depend on immediate action. Keeping in contact with the buyer should smooth over any time delay.

Thanks, guys. An interesting discussion evolved. But I think that what I'm really looking for is some sort of escrow service. The buyer puts the money in the escrow account, I see it there and send the stuff. He examines it, and if OK, he releases the funds to me. If he returns it, I release the funds back to him when my stuff comes back. Has anyone used this sort of service?
