That is not what he said, you don't seem to have understood what was being said. Go back and read the OP again. He is saying there is little point in praising poor photographs, it does nothing to help the posting photographer.

There is nothing wrong with posting such images and that is not the issue here, whether the photographer wants comments or not. What is wrong, is when people say great set or excellent work, when it is obvious to most of us, that this is not the case.

It's at this point, that it is best to say nothing. That would be more fair and kinder to the posting photographer, than telling them they are a good set when they clearly are not.

I did NOT say it was wrong in posting what they post, I stated how I view/admire them.
I understood what he said. But it appears that you did not understand what I said.
And I asked a question....... based on my interpretation of what he wrote, you know, to get it clarified.

Understood, however, I was commenting on your last sentence to Rick which is here

Quote: "So you're only interested in seeing images where people are looking to advance their photography as an art form? Seems a bit narrow."

I just re-read Ricks post and don't see anywhere, that he is suggesting that he only wants to see people posting images that they want to advance as an art form.

Rick states that he does not like to see poor photography praised with gushing accolades. My understanding is that he has no cares, as what poor rubbish someone may post. It all has to do with gushing praise comments, about such poor photography and I must admit that I agree with his observations.

Zooman posted a topic to Analysis and Admin moved it to Birds. I provided the link on page 1 of this thread to the guidelines for Photo Analysis.

It's worth reading.

My bolding above, THAT'S why I asked the question, for MY clarification.......
Making sure that he simply doesn't want to see any poor photography in general either.

Well, I said I was through with my chatter. Changed my mind.
It's sad that we have self appointed "forum police" who seriously believe they have the right to change the rules.
Some want to tell what what we should and should not post when the rules clearly state what we may post and where to post it.
Others spend all their time trying to teach us their way, when perhaps many of us don't even like their way.
You who know me know to expect some pictures from me that you would have tossed, but some most of mine are "just to show" for whatever reason I think a few might like. Until Admin sees fit to stop me, I will continue.

Many misunderstandings here from some of us. Some of the comments here are not responses to what Rick said. Some are in response to what other members are saying. Some are saying we should not post here unless we post to learn....In my opinion, that's TRUE in Analysis but not true in the Gallery.

Then there's a poster who's photos are excellent. Great compositions/exposures ... everything. I view them to LEARN but the subject matter? I wouldn't travel to Utah if someone paid me.

True. So many times the photos seem like sheer perfection to some, but the subject may be of no interest to some.

Here is something that no one has brought up. Has anyone else noticed that the people who are posting their snapshots and the people replying with praise are the same people over and over? They all address each other by their first names. What we have here is a social group. They don't want criticism. They want to be friends. If you don't want to "put up with" this, then move on. There is nothing in the rules against this. Different strokes for different folks. I would suggest leaving them alone. Maybe it adds meaning to their lives in their old age.

I said it as second respondent on page 1:

Photo Gallery is primarily a social sharing site.

When I joined UHH in November 2012, I had never been on a forum of any type. I wanted to learn users' first names, I wanted to share their joy and delight, and I hoped that others would do the same for me. I had a "buddy list" of just about anyone who ever commented on any of my photos

Of course sharing the joy of a hobby adds meaning to one's life! And 13+ years later, I've learned a great deal more about photography than when I started - mostly the digital aspect and post-processing.

And also learned a great deal about the bad and the good of anonymous internet interactions.

I fully agree with you. I don't go to the gallery and I see no reason to disturb what they are enjoying.

You can probably say the same thing about other Sections such as "For Your Consideration" or "Digital Artistry".

I’ve read through Rick’s original post and several pages on this feed that followed. They’ve made me think about which of my photos please me and the reasons why. I rarely post unless I think I have something worth looking at.

My first question (to myself) is “What makes a good photograph”? To me, it is rarely a photo that is technically brilliant. It’s because a photo says something about the subject. In my case the subject is usually human.

The handful of my people photos that stand out over the years are great because they reflect the personality of a person or reflect something that was happening when it was shot. I know they are good because of the responses I get from those who know the subjects. Those photos are way more meaningful than a so-called professional shot taken in a studio and sold for large sums of money.

Here’s an idea for you all. When you want to post a photo to UHH, in the Gallery or somewhere else, how about explaining why you like it and why you think it’s worth showing. If we all understood that, we would probably view your photos in a different light.
