Hi All
My cousin is recuperating from a hiking fall and has to be immobile for 6 weeks. Her next safer hobby will be photography. Can you suggest a photography book to learn from and inspire her in her new adventure?

Regards
Naomi

While you don't absolute have to (I do a lot of photography arond the house) but photography is a hobby that needs traveling. She can read but it would be tough to read for 6 weeks without actually doing some photography.

I would recommend Robert Frank’s “The Americans”. Should be available in many local libraries.

I was able to take many wonderful photographs from my wheelchair while sitting in my wheelchair recovering from a shattered femur for several months. Even though I am still mostly in a wheelchair I went to Costa Rica for a week in December, a Caribbean Cruise and saw Mayan Runs in January and spent several days in Tucson in February. In my wheelchair or deck chair I have also taken wonderful pictures of insects, months, butterflies and birds without leaving my house.

I would see what books she can get from the library. Those tend to be vetted. My local library has a few really good ones. The digital photography book by Scott Kelby and Digital photography complete course, Taylor et. al. are really good in my opinion.

Don’t let her read anything about taking selfies

How old is she?
Does she have access to a tablet?

Photography is a virus that can turn into an obsession... If it becomes a religion, it can be VERY expensive.

If you can find a copy of "A World Through My Window" by Ruth Orkin, It would be a wonderful gift.
Ruth Orkin was a very gifted (and much Collected) Photographer, who had a side project of photographs from her window.
It would give her inspiration to start immediately

There are a series of books that you can purchase from Amazon called "A Year With My Camera". These books are set up like a photography course AND there is photography course by this name that she can sign up for. IT'S FREE!! The lessons are sent weekly. If she wants to move at a faster pace the books are the way to go. The author/instructor explains the lesson and then the "student" practices for the week. These books start at a beginner level and with the subsequent books work into an intermediate level.

Another book you may want to look at is "Digital Photography Complete Course Everything You Need to Know in 20 Weeks." This is also set up as a course

Then there is this book by Tom Ang. "Digital Photography Essentials: A Practical and Inspiring Guide That Will Take You from Beginner to Confident"

Hopefully, she will find one of these useful.

There must be hundreds. Consider books OF photographs BY famous photographers AND books on photographic techniques — both using the camera and post-processing the images. Also consider doing YouTube searches for videos on any topic of interest. It is a veritable LIBRARY of "how to TV." Of course, in any field, about 80% of what's out there is noise, but you have to decide what is signal for yourself. It becomes apparent pretty quickly.

If she has computer and Internet access, then You Tube is a very good option as well.
