Serious users of radar data make statements on the air that show a distinct lack of knowledge concerning radars. A presenter on The Weather Channel stated the small ring of dark surrounding a radar site was caused by the Cone of Silence. The cone of silence is the space just above the radar antenna extending straight up. Does not impact the display which is horizontal in orientation. The darkened circular area is usually the result of Moving Target Indicator (MTI) cancelling close-in clutter that is not moving and difficult to monitor.

Hey they are picked for their smile and presentation skills, then taught enough weather jargon to sound good.
System officers in a two seat fighter they aren't.

After I was discharged from the service, I bought a new VW Bettle for cash. I was a student and despite working part time I couldn't afford the price of insurance, I sold the Bug and rode my motorcycle mostly year round for a great number of years.
It was important to be aware of the weather forecast when riding but for the most part the most accurate forecast was obtained by looking out the window before going out.

True. The female on the Fox Weather Channel gave some very confusing info concerning radars.
