Oh my gosh... so true, so tragic. And as you said, I am afraid of where it goes from here. Watching a young sophisticated, successful couple in a trendy Upper West Side restaurant with their two young kids... probably 5 or 6 years old, the parents spent the entire meal laughing, drinking, and talking while the two kids played with their IPads. For HOURS! And of course we all laugh about how those kids in a few years will be untouchable regardless of their parents's attempts to reach them, unless it is via a tik-tok reel .... like I've said a thousand times.. how can we be so STUPID!?!?

The parents are talking to each other? Instead of each buried in their own cellphones? There is hope after all.

Not only does everyone have their noses buried in cell phones but I've seen tourists holding up Kindles and tablets and taking pictures with them - it's totally ridiculous!! Here's an example of people more interested in their cell phones than the classical artwork surrounding them - sheesh!!

Those people are reading descriptions of those art works from the museum's website.

It doesn't have to have anything to do with photography. This is the chit-chat non-photography section. Says so in the section title.

Psst, it is in reality about the side-hustle of many phon----photographering equipment.

New word to replace "Ciao" and "Aloha" : "Smile".

I have a "smart phone." I refuse to accept E-mail on it. Call or text me if it's important. If it's not urgent, don't expect an immediate reply. There are no social apps on it; FB is on my desktop computer. I check that once or twice a day. I take pictures of things deemed worthy of keeping not something I'll be flushing tomorrow.
BTW: I don't have many FB "friends." If we were friends before FB came along, you are welcome to call, E-mail or drop by for a visit anytime. PM me on this site as well.

I know that I shouldn't call you and won't answer your call either. But how do I know if it's you calling so I do answer the call and when I recognize that it's you I simply hang up. No I won't text you. Texting is too difficult for me. Email is easier as I can use the PC to do it with the keyboard. Touch typiing on the phone is too difficult.

I'm 84. When I was working the farm, the smartphone was an essential tool. Not only did it show me the weather radar when I needed a forecast, I used it for keeping track of irrigation zones and orders. The camera was useful for documentation. I was not tempted by social media or browsing the web. It was a utility item.

The problem isn't the phone. It's the user habits.

Right on!!!!

I am also 75, I have two of them, one is because I have a pace maker. What the second one is used for I have no idea, it stays plugged in and I have not moved it in almost two years. The other one I used to make calls but mostly it is useless to me. I have trouble understand most people on that phone, pretty much a useless toy.

Let me suggest you try an app called InnoCaption which is paid for by the U.S. Govt and can only be used by the hard of hearing. When you receive a call it prepares an almost instantaneous written transcript of the caller says to you and what you say to the caller. You read the transcript on your screen. I'm almost deaf and it changed my life.

I love this response...I am always feeling guilty that I am 'hooked', but there are wonderful things that I have learned, discovered, and many ways that I have grown because of that little screen!

It is the user... !

I forgot to mention, I’m 75, and I have never had a cell phone. Have never seen the need. And I’m probably the last with a land line. My phone is to make and receive calls.

I have a land line as well and agree that the cell phone has become an intrusive part of modern culture. But when you are out and about, it is comforting and convenient to have a connection with the home base. Yeah, I know that we used to get along with out it, but we also walked and rode a horse.

I'm sliding' into 80 years old, had the very first iPhone, and now have an iPhone 15.

Also have the latest Apple watch, M2 iPad, iMac and a new M3/Max Powered MacPro Laptop ... all of which keep each other updated with any information that I add to one.

I have the iPhone with me every waking hour. It is a health companion that counts my steps on my walking plan ... an app I use allows me to set the distance my Doctor agreed upon and I've met or exceeded it EVERY DAY for 3+ years now.

I can take my heart rate, oxygen levels and even perform an EKG with a credit card sized accessory that my Cardiologist approved.

More appropriately for this site:

I have an app that allows me to control my mirrorless camera remotely (everything, including selection of focus point) while wirelessly showing what the camera sees on my phone or iPad. It also transfers a jpeg of the images taken for immediate review, or reference/selection later by WiFi or Blue-Tooth. There is no lag. Adjust>Shoot>See! The camera itself is capturing RAW while sending jpegs.

I have a light meter app which is very accurate.

Also, I use 2 different Profoto Apps to control lighting: One allows control my strobes remotely with my cell phone/iPad. This is an incredibly convenient addition. The second app allows me to use the pro strobes with the iPhone/iPad itself ... and the results are scary good ... and fun.

It's a brave new world ... Yes, I also use it as a phone ... I've asked that I be buried with a fully charged iPhone ... just in case, LOL!

My wife insists on a landline. I have a smartphone so the kids can text me and I can get directions when out in the vehicle that has no navigation. Mostly it sits on my desk and I often forget to take it with me.

I took it last night when we went out for dinner so I could watch the hockey game.

I'm older than you are...

You took your phone with you when you and your wife went out for dinner? Well at least you are honest about your priorities and typical of so many people who would rather be with their devices instead of the people they are with .
