Do you intend to store edited images on your laptop?

Just bought my wife a new laptop, it was a MacBook Pro M3 with 16gb memory and a 2TB ssd.

The reason we went with a 2TB drive is she does not want external drives except for backup, whenever she picks up her laptop she wants all her files, photos, documents everything to be immediately accessible. She does not want to hunt around for the dongle and the attached external drives to look at a picture or whatever. Her choice, she loves it and is extremely happy, the M3 Macbook Air dropped a week or two after we got the Pro but really doesn't cost much more with the same specs.

And yes as always, Apple is a complete ripoff with the price they charge for the upgrade to 2TB.

Because we both use Macs, we were tied to the Mac OS, if you are more comfortable with Windows platform there are lots out there.

A Mac with 16gb memory is sufficient due to the way it is employed, I would go to 32GB (minimum)on a Windows machine for memory and the same size SSD for storage.

I have used Dells and Lenovo's for work but never used them for LR and PS but they have been very reliable laptops and change them every 3 years

I have a Mac that I just cannot get used to. I am going back to a Windows laptop. I am asking for help in which is best for photography, specifically. Especially how big space wise I should buy. I will be placing images on external hard drive but would still like to have a larger capacity laptop to hold edited images. I am interested in Dell or Lenovo.
If I decide to sell my Mac rather than give to a family member I will list on UHH.

My Lenovo has served me well

Last year, I bought a Dell XPS15 with a quad core I7 processor, 32gb mem, and 2tb ssd with factory installed W11. I occasionally process images on it with ON1 Photo Raw. The laptop has a NVIDIA GTX4060 GPU. I don’t have the oled touchscreen. I’ve been pleased with its performance. My wife bought a MacBook Air about the same time. The only thing about her laptop that I’m envious about is her battery life. With the M2 (?) processor, it’s not uncommon for her to get 8-10 hrs off a charge. I get about 2-3 if I’m lucky.

I have had several brands of both desktop and laptop computers in the past but have become a repeat Dell customer for both. My requirements may be greater than yours since I need extra RAM, processing speed and internal memory to work with massive spreadsheets in addition to photo post processing. So, I custom design the specs of each Dell that I buy. That said, Dell has a large selection of desktop and laptops to suit anybody's desires. They are reliable and will last as long as you need.

Personally I wouldn't go back to a Windows machine, that's just me. Be careful with buying a windows edition to go on a MacBook. As I recall that was only workable when Macs had the Intel chips, I don't know if that is possible today with the new M series of chips. If it still works, then be sure to check which version of windows you buy. I've got my old MacBook and a copy of Windows that would run on it. However the version I have is no longer supported by MS, so I can't load it up. When I could it ran great. As for parallels, I have not used it. Good luck.

One positive note, I did run into the situation where I got hijacked when I clicked on a link. Things looked semi legit, they wanted my credit card to restore my system. All I had to was delete the portion and reload windows!

I don't believe that Adobe software isn't transferable to different platforms. Make sure you can use what you now have or you'll find another service bill in your mailbox. Things may have changed over the years but this was trur at one time. Now, with their subscription service this may or may not have changed.

I don't understand not being able to get used to a Mac, I started out with a Mac mini quite a few years back and found it much easier to use than a PC, in fact I treated it Like a win unit.
Today you could not run fast enough to give me a windows machine!!!
I have a 1Tb hd on my I Mac all that is on it it the OS, Apps/programs and what ever I keep on my desktop, All other documents and Photos are on external drives this includes backup drives.

I agree. Mac’s have a bit of a learning curve when switching from WINDOWS, but I never found it that difficult.

I switched years ago when my Dell died on me and I needed a new laptop prior to a trip. You couldn’t pay me enough to get another Windows computer. When I was working I was frustrated using a Windows desktop.

Maybe spend some time reviewing professional laptop reviews to get an unbiased opinion, since human nature is to recommend what we own. It’s called “self-validation.” Cheers!

OK, fine.
I used to service computers and have seen to many people with tears in their eyes when their drive fails
and they lose all their data, pictures, etc.
Drives fail, fact of li*** oops computers.
Even SSD drives.
Wanting to keep everything on a internal drive is something I understand.
Not practicing safe computing, I don't.

Did he say no backups? He said that "she does not want an external drive except for backup" That is she would back up to external drive but not using the external drive for her main storage.

Thanks Bob, you are correct, we use 2TB Samsung T7’s for backup.

Safe computing, I also have a 10 disk Synology in a raid 5 configuration, I think our data is pretty safe.

I used to run a data centre, daily backups on-site,weekly backups offsite, all drives were mirrored, we never lost a thing

I'm like you about the Mac. I have a MacBook Pro that I bought several (6) years ago and I can't use it for everything. For Windows, I have a Dell 2 in 1 with 1TB SSD storage and 16GB memory. It works fine, but is only three years old. I have had some problems that were solved with a reinstall. The Mac, however, keeps running and running. Never a problem, never a "blue screen of death" and no slowdowns whatever. It has the latest Mac software and runs amazingly well. I just have trouble getting used to the different interface and software commands. I believe the Mac is a much better computer, better built and does not suffer from hacking problems. I just can't get used to it, but it is a far better computer than any Windows computer I've ever had. I built my first PC in 1984 with an IBM PC-XT mother board and the usual parts. I was competent with MS DOS and still feel more comfortable with a C:\ prompt than windows. Don't give up on the Mac, use it when you can and use the Windows computer when you must. GL
