One day we arranged a badly composed still life with uglee lighting, as a "demonstration", and posted it to the Gallery. Our sole hook was that all the content was vintage photo relic items. Plenty of little short compliments poured forth, as per the custom for Gallery pix. Or maybe it was in the Critique section. But nevertheless, the little kneejerk kudos were dutifully heaped thereupon. You cant provoke any negative replies even if you try.

You didn't try hard enough. Portrait of a propane tank. Critique? I think I need to buy a mirrorless camera. That fixes everything.

Have you considered converting to mono ?

I could have done much better if you had included the exif data.

What printer did you use ?

Perhaps if you feel that the image doesn't warrant inclusion in the Gallery you could pen a few words suggesting the OP seeks advice from the Photo Analaysis section.

There's a big difference between a poor image and one you don't like which also has to be avoided. We have a poster who does what appears to be some excellent horticultural shots - but I'm not big on flowers, so I don't comment.

And we should remember there's not one of us here whose taken a frame where it would have been better to leave the lens cap on.

I have to agree with almost everything you say. Okay, everything you say.
It used to irritate me on a photo FB thread when people submitted photos taken with a smart phone and the horizon was tilted. I told the moderator to send them to me first so I could fix the horizon.
If I get a pat on the back for a crappy photo, I will never try to better my game.

Folks - I raised this subject a few years back and thought I’d give it an encore. UHH has 2 sections for members to post pics - Photo Gallery and Photo Analysis and posting constructive criticism in the first is frowned upon. I think this rule does a disservice to photographers looking to up their game.

I often look at posts in the Gallery and too often see, sorry for the blunt language, just awful photos. I’m not talking about subjective matters. I’m talking about pics that are out of focus, poorly exposed, with wildly tilted horizons (not done intentionally for artistic purposes), badly post processed or overprocessed, poorly composed with telephone poles growing out of heads, etc. or any number of other technical (NOT subjective) flaws.

And most times, well meaning members post, “Great set”, or “Nicely done” or other “ attaboys” in an attempt to not hurt another member’s feelings. I see this as counterproductive and reinforcing bad technique by poster. I ask how is a member to develop better photography skills if, I again apologize upfront, technically terrible pics are displayed and followed by lots of gushing platitudes?

Last time I mentioned this, I was slapped down by numerous members who argue that unless a poster requests constructive criticism, nothing negative should be said. Ok - I’ll buy the “If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing” idea, but gushing over bad stuff does harm to the poster too. If the pics are bad, say nothing. Stop reinforcing bad work.

Just a suggestion to those posting to the Gallery in the future - think about soliciting criticisms so you can improve your work. Sure you will get many nasty, snarky and often incorrect replies from a certain subsection of members, but you will also get many great suggestions for improvement offered in a polite, constructive manner. I’ve been a photographer for 55 yrs and I welcome all well meaning and civil critiques. We are never too old to learn a new trick.

Anxious to see the replies to this rant.

When I taught photography, I had my students bring in their work on slides after I gave an assignment, then I would put the slide up on the screen. I would always give a positive, sometimes it was difficult, but after some positives I would give some suggestions on how to make the image better.
I had some students who elected not to bring any images in, and that was OK, they learned from watching others images.

I'm waiting for someone to correct the image and then re-post it.

Suddenly all hell breaks loose... the re-edit was done without asking for it!

A mediocre skill set with the wonders of "AI" can boost anyone's ego...

There's no reason to get flustered because someone likes something you don't like.
("you" meaning no one in particular)
Whether they do or don't, and whether it's perfect or not, exactly how important is that to you? I mean, it's going to get daylight again tomorrow either way. Be thankful that we don't all like the same thing.
If it IS that important to anyone, then they should start a section with rules just for their own idea of what is perfect.

NOT!

I think the OP doesn't mean that. I think he meant when people didn't think the photo is great but they just say it's great to make the the poster happy.

Inspiring/uninspiring is totally relative...
Just because it isn't to you doesn't mean it isn't to others.
I suppose some, on a scale of 1-10, have requirements of 75 (or higher).
You mean life is too short to spend time looking at things you don't care for?
But how do you know you don't care for it if you don't see it?
Or are we all just subordinate.

Some people are simply "super nice" and praise any result.

I think it's OK as that is most posters were looking for. So I see no problem with that although I don't do that. I just stay out of the area altogether.

But you spend your time here letting everyone know life is too short.

Wasn't that a waste of your time?

No need to reply, it would just be another waste of time.
